Four Runs in First Leads Way

Led by four runs in the first inning the Calgary Vipers (29-21) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (28-20) 9-6 before 3120 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Calgary was spurred on by three multi run innings as after four in the first they plated three in the fourth and another two in the eighth to salt the game away. At the plate the top two batters in the lineup led the way as Jonny Kaplan went five-for-five with three runs scored while Wilver Perez homered and knocked in four runs in total. Out of the bullpen Mike Burns was terrific in holding the lead with two scoreless innings including three strike outs while Chris Bodishbaugh threw a scoreless frame with one punch out. With the win the Vipers move into a first place tie with Edmonton in the North Division.

"We came out swinging the bats tonight and it was a good comeback after tough one last night, I was very impressed with the effort from our team," said Manager Morgan Burkhart.

Mark Michael (4-2) gathered the win after striking out six in five innings while Andrew Arreola (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up seven runs in five and two-third innings.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan and Jimmy Rohan singled to put runners at the corners, C.J. Ziegler smashed a base hit for a run batted in, with two outs Chad Ehrnsberger collected a RBI single, and Justin Tellam smoked a 420 foot two-run double for a 4-0 advantage.

Edmonton cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the second frame as Enrique Cruz singled, Carlos Duncan doubled, and with two outs Steve Brown delivered a two-run base hit.

The Vipers increased their lead to 7-2 in the fourth when Bryan Burke walked, with two outs Kaplan singled, and Wilver Perez launched his sixth home run of the season to drive in three runs.

The Capitals matched with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth as Duncan walked, with two outs Brown also walked, Matt Rogelstad doubled home two, and Todd Linden singled in one for a 7-5 score.

Calgary again increased their lead in the eighth inning when with two outs Aaron Dunsmore walked as a pinch hitter, Kaplan tripled for a RBI, and Perez drove in a run with a base hit for a 9-5 advantage.

Edmonton closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth as Linden walked, advanced to second base on defensive indifference, and scored on a Brent Metheny single for a 9-6 final.

This series in Edmonton to take on the Capitals continues on Saturday July 16th at 2:05.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Monday July 18th at 6:30 for a make-up game against the Edmonton Capitals where it will also be Staples Student School Supply Drive Night.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
