Fielders Lose a Close One, 5-2 to the Outlaws
July 15, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
The Lake County Fielders lost a tough one tonight, falling to the Chico Outlaws 5-2.
The score however, does not dictate how close this ballgame really was.
Chico got on the board early, after back to back to back singles from Jay Pecci, Kurt Steinhauer and Adam Buschini kicked off the first inning. Pecci would score on the single by Buschini, giving the Outlaws a 1-0 lead.
That lead did not last too long though, as first baseman Alan Rick led off the bottom the second inning with a solo home run (third of season) to right field to tie the game up at 1-1.
Despite early troubles in the first inning, Fielders' starting pitcher Josh Hildebrand had a very solid outing, going five innings and giving up one run on five hits, striking out two and walking nobody. Hildebrand would get a no-decision in the game.
The Fielders best opportunity to take the lead came in the 5th inning, after a throwing error from Chico's first baseman allowed Franklyn Lopez to reach first base. Following the error, third baseman Sam Judah doubled making it runners on the corners with only one out. The Outlaw's decided to intentionally walk Brad Agustin, in hopes of facing Hildebrand with the bases loaded. But Fielders new manager Chris Arago decided to pinch-hit for his pitcher, giving Brad Payne the opportunity to hit with the bases loaded. Payne struck out swinging for the second out, and John Dziamba grounded out to end the inning.
Jesus Gomez then came in relief for the Fielders, and after a perfect 6th inning, he ran into some trouble in the 7th. Gomez walked the bases loaded, and with two outs, walked one more batter, which gave the Outlaws a 2-1 lead. Evan Kholi would replace him in the 8th inning. Kholi pitched a perfect 8th, but struggled in the 9th inning, giving up three runs on three hits with one walk, increasing the Outlaws' lead to 5-1.
The Fielders would score one more in the 9th inning to make it a 5-2 game, but it was a bit too late.
The Fielders, who only managed five hits in tonight's game, committed no errors against Chico tonight (compared to the six they committed last night). Gomez got the loss for the Fielders, while Chico starting pitcher Demetrius Banks got the win.
With the loss, the Fielders forfeit their first place standing to the Edmonton Capitals, who are now a .5 game ahead in the standing.
The Fielders will try to snap out of their two game losing streak tomorrow night against the Outlaws for the fourth game of the series at 7p.m.
