Four Run Third Inning Propels Scrappers to Win

(Niles, OH)-One night after dropping a one run game to the Tri-City ValleyCats on a ninth inning rally, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers used a four run third inning to hold off another ninth inning rally to top the ValleyCats 4-3.

In the bottom of the third inning, Alexis Pantoja started the inning with a single. Gabriel Mejia followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Both runners would come around to score when Silento Sayles followed with a two run double for a 2-0 lead. Jodd Carter followed and connected on a two run homerun, his second of the season, to push the lead out to 4-0.

Tri-City would get a run back in the top of the fourth inning. Stephen Wren started the inning with a walk. With one out he would advance to second on a single by Randy Cesar. Wren would come in to score on a fielding error by Jonathan Laureano to cut the Scrappers lead to 4-1.

The ValleyCats would rally in the top of the ninth for the second straight night. After the inning started with two quick outs, Taylor Jones would extend the game with a double to center. Jake Rogers, down to his final strike, connected on a two run homerun into the Scrappers bullpen in right to bring the score to 4-3. Brayly Mejia would then strike out to end the game.

Aaron Civale started and took the no decision for the Scrappers with 3.0 innings of work. He allowed four hits but did not allow a run. Civale struck out one. Tanner Tully (2-0) earned the win in 3.0 innings of relief. Tully allowed two hits and one unearned run. He walked one and struck out one. Kenny Mathew would also go 1.0 inning in relief. He did not allow a hit or a run. Mathews walked one and struck out one. Henry Martinez (1) earned the save with 2.0 innings of relief. Martinez allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits. He struck out three.

The Scrappers (7-18) will look for their first series win of the season on Wednesday night as they wrap up their three game series with the ValleyCats (13-12).
