Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - In a game filled with countless chances, the Hudson Valley Renegades allowed them all to fall by the wayside in a 1-0 loss Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades left 10 men on base, including five in scoring position, for the game. The loss dropped Hudson Valley back below .500 at 12-13 for the year.
Each team squandered opportunities early as Hudson Valley left seven men on base through the first six innings. They had runners at first and third with one out in the second, but a pop out and a groundout ended that threat. West Virginia meanwhile left four on base through the first six, including three men in scoring position, and had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the fifth.
West Virginia finally broke through in the seventh after Renegades reliever Garrett Fulenchek struggled. The young right-hander allowed a walk, but got a groundball to second from leftfielder Ty Moore. Second baseman Jon Popadics threw to shortstop Bill Pujols for a fielder's choice, however Pujols dropped the ball. The error put runners at first and second with no one out. Fortunately, Fulenchek got designated hitter Kevin Krause to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to leave a runner at third with two out.
That's when Fulenchek would lose control. He hit catcher Arden Pabst with a pitch, then walked second baseman Kevin Mahala to load the bases with two out. With centerfielder Sandy Santos standing in, Fulenchek uncorked a wild pitch that allowed first baseman Albert Baur to score from third and give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
After that, Hudson Valley had multiple chances to score. In the seventh, the Renegades got a runner to third with one out. However, rightfielder Ryan Boldt struck out and centerfielder Jake Fraley popped out to end the threat.
In the eighth, the Renegades got runners to first and second with two out catcher Danny De La Calle grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Hudson Valley left a runner on base in every inning except the third and ninth.
Getting the win for West Virginia was reliever Luis Escobar (2-1), who tossed three scoreless innings. Fulenchek (0-3) took the loss. Though the run was unearned, the reliever walked three and hit a batter in 1.2 innings. Christian Mota pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to garner his first save of the season. The Black Bears struck out 10 Renegades for the game.
The loss erased another solid performance from starter Adrian Navas who allowed only two hits in five innings of work. Reliever Elias Torres was great out of the pen, going 2.1 scoreless frames and striking out six. On the down side, Hudson Valley walked seven hitters.
Hudson Valley had seven hits in the game, but they were all singles. Boldt, third baseman Jim Haley and first baseman Nate Lowe had two hits apiece. The Black Bears had only four singles for the game, but were aided by seven walks and two hit batsmen from Hudson Valley pitchers. In addition to the 10 left on base by the Renegades. West Virginia stranded nine men.
The Renegades wrap-up their three-games series with the Black Bears tomorrow. First-pitch is slated for 7:05. Taking the bump for the Renegades will be righty Eduar Lopez (2-1, 2.50 ERA) facing West Virginia right-hander Stephan Meyer (1-2, 6.35 ERA). For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
