Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

AUBURN, NY --- Blake Perkins' two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Auburn the lead as the Doubledays came-from-behind to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 3-1 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Falcon Park.

Vermont reliever Ivan Andeuza had tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings after coming into the game to start the bottom of the third inning, but gave up back-to-back two-out walks in the bottom of the eighth before Perkins lined a triple to rightfield to give Auburn a 2-1 lead. Perkins then scored on a Nick Banks RBI infield single to shortstop off reliever Derek Beasley.

2016 Oakland Athletics first-round pick A.J. Puk started the game for the Lake Monsters in his professional debut. After the leadoff batter reached on a fielding error, Puk got a forceout and inning-ending double play to get out of the first inning on just six pitches. The left-hander out of the University of Florida then retired all three batters he faced in the second inning on groundouts. In his two innings of work, Puk threw just 17 pitches with 12 of them for strikes.

The Lake Monsters scored their only run of the game in the fifth when Luke Persico led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a Steven Pallares RBI groundout. Persico ended the night 3-for-4, giving him three of Vermont's seven hits in the game. First baseman Miguel Mercedes, who entered the night second in the NY-Penn League with a .366 average, had to leave the game with an injury in the top of the fourth inning after reaching first on an infield single.

Andeuza (1-2) allowed just two singles and hit a batter after coming into the game before the two walks and two-run triple in the eighth to take loss for Vermont (13-12). Auburn finished with just four hits, the third straight game that the Lake Monsters have held their opponent to four hits in a game and eighth straight game with eight hits or less (Vermont opponents hitting just .206 overall). Angher Cespedes (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Doubledays (13-12).

After splitting the first two matchups, the Lake Monsters and Doubledays will wrap up the three-game series at Auburn on Wednesday starting at 12:05 pm. Vermont will then return home to historic Centennial Field to begin a three-game series against the Williamsport Crosscutters on Thursday.
