NORWICH- CT - The Connecticut Tigers (16-9) rebounded against the State College Spikes (18-7) Tuesday night with a 2-0 shutout against the team with the best record in the New York-Penn League.
Austin Sodders set the table for the Connecticut pitching staff tonight, retiring all nine batters that he faced in the first three frames. For Sodders, he picked up two strikeouts in his three inning start.
Connecticut gave Sodders the lead in the second inning, Blaise Salter lead off the inning with a double down the left field line that was deflected by third basemen Danny Hudzina. Josh Lester then worked a lengthy at-bat, eventually, drilling an RBI single to right centerfield to put the Tigers on the board. The Tigers later loaded the bases against Dobzanski but could not push anything more across.
Oswaldo Castillo took the baton from Sodders and pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen. Castillo did not allow a hit in his stint, walked one and struck out three.
The Tigers added to the lead in the fifth, Mario Sanjur got the inning going with a single into left centerfield. For Sanjur, it was his second hit of the ballgame and earned him his first multi-hit game of the season. Gonzalez followed with a single to right to set the table for Cole Bauml. Bauml lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Sanjur from third and make it 2-0 Connecticut. The Tigers continued to threaten in the fifth, with bases loaded and one out, Salter grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the rally.
Connecticut pitching allowed the first Spikes hit in the sixth inning when Danny Hudzina doubled off the left field fence. Joe Navilhon buckled down though, stranding Hudzina at third by striking out Tommy Edman and getting Jose Martinez to ground out to second. Navilhon ended his appearance going two scoreless, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Mark Ecker closed the game out for the Tigers, pitching two innings and facing the minimum, six batters. Ecker notched his third save of the year and finished out the first shutout of the season for the Tigers pitching staff.
The Tigers go for the series-win tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. for Camp Day at Dodd Stadium. The Tigers have won their first three series at Dodd this season.
