Frisco RoughRiders News Release
The RoughRiders rallied with four runs in the ninth for a 6-3 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks Monday night at Whataburger Field to snap a three-game losing streak.
After the Hooks (3-3, 28-48) scored an unearned run in the eighth to take the lead, Frisco loaded the bases on three straight singles. Elio Sarmiento's two-run single gave the 'Riders the lead for good. Later in the inning, both Renny Osuna and Tommy Mendonca added RBI singles to give the 'Riders some insurance.
The RoughRiders (2-4, 42-34) erased a 2-0 deficit in the eighth when Guilder Rodriguez doubled home a pair against former RoughRider Mike Perconte. Tanner Scheppers (1-0) tossed a pair of innings for his first win of the season at any level, and Tyler Tufts posted a scoreless ninth for his first save as a RoughRider this year.
Frisco starter Joe Wieland worked five innings in his Double-A debut. The righty allowed a run on six hits and struck out five, which puts his 2011 strikeout total at 101 between Frisco and High-A Myrtle Beach.
Corpus Christi starter Xavier Cedeno struck out the first nine men he faced and took a perfect game into the sixth inning. Rodriguez laced a two-out single to right to end Cedeno's bid for perfection.
The left-hander finished after six and two-thirds innings. He recorded a Corpus Christi-record 14 strikeouts and allowed just three RoughRiders to reach base.
Corpus Christi scored in the third inning on a Jose Altuve two-out RBI single. J.D. Martinez doubled in Altuve two innings later to give the Hooks a 2-0 advantage.
The Texas League All-Star break is Tuesday and Wednesday, with the 75th All-Star Game Wednesday night. Nine RoughRiders are on the South Division roster, including five starters.
The 'Riders resume the regular season slate Thursday night at 7:05 with the opener of a three-game series against the Springfield Cardinals. For tickets, call the RoughRiders ticket office at (972) 731-9200.
QUICK HITS: Cedeno's record-setting effort comes one day after Frisco's Robbie Erlin set a franchise record with 14 strikeouts...The previous Corpus Christi record was 12, set by current Cleveland Indian starter Mitch Talbot.
