Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

Frisco (1-4, 41-34) @ Corpus Christi (3-2, 28-47)

If you weren't here last night, you missed a good one. Left-hander Robbie Erlin set a Frisco franchise record with 14 strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings - and did not get a decision. That's because T.J. Steele, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, drilled a line-drive, two-run home run off the metal fence above the left field wall to give the Hooks a 4-3, walk-off win over the RoughRiders.

Steele's heroics gave the Hooks their second walk-off victory this season - and both have come courtesy of the long ball. Jonathan Villar clubbed a solo shot in his Hooks debut June 1 to beat Springfield 6-5. Tonight's game concludes this 12-game home stand - the longest of the season for the Hooks. They could wrap it up with their first series sweep of the year.

Tonight's Matchup:

RHP Joe Wieland (6-3, 2.10 w/Myrtle Beach) vs. LHP Xavier Cedeno (4-5, 3.81)

Wieland, a fourth-round pick of the Rangers in 2008 out of Bishop Manogue High School in Reno, Nevada, makes his AA debut here tonight for Frisco. In 14 games and 13 starts this season for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Carolina League, Wieland is 6-3 with a 2.10 ERA, with - and this is not a misprint - 4 walks and 96 strikeouts in 85.2 innings. He currently leads the CL in WHIP (0.96) and ranks second in the circuit in ERA and innings pitched. Wieland last took the mound June 21 as the starting pitcher for the Carolina League All-Stars in their matchup against the California League All-Stars at Modesto's John Thurman Field. Wieland retired the three batters he faced, striking out one, on six total pitches. All six pitches were strikes. His last regular-season action came in a June 17 win over Frederick.

· In his last 11 starts, covering 73.2 innings, has issued just 1 walk (79 Ks)

· Has held opponents to two or fewer runs in 10 of his 13 starts (no runs on 4 occasions)

· Tabbed by Baseball America as the #22 prospect in the Rangers farm system

Cedeno, a free-agent signee of the Astros in December, makes his 16th start this season and his fifth against the Riders. Wednesday against San Antonio, Cedeno gave up five runs on four hits and five walks over five frames in a 5-3 loss. The big blow in that game was Jaff Decker's grand slam home run in the third. The next batter, James Darnell, also homered, accounting for the only home runs allowed by Cedeno in his last six starts. Over his last three starts, Cedeno is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA. Cedeno leads the league in strikeouts (79) and ranks third in innings pitched (87.1) and eighth in ERA (3.81).

· In 4 starts vs. Frisco is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA, with 3 walks and 21 Ks in 24.0 IP

· Has a 2.12 GO/AO ratio

· Is 3-2 with a 3.22 ERA in 8 home starts (1-3, 4.62, 7 road starts)

Erlin the Magician

Frisco's starter pulled a rabbit out of his hat last night in the form of 14 strikeouts in 6.2 innings (or 20 outs). Erlin's 14 strikeouts is not only a Frisco franchise record, but it's also the most strikeouts by one pitcher in a game involving the Hooks.

Mitch Talbot, now with the Cleveland Indians, holds the Hooks single-game mark with 12 strikeouts. Talbot set that record during seven innings of shutout work in a June 22, 2006 win over Arkansas at Whataburger Field. Mat Latos, now with the San Diego Padres, held the previous high for strikeouts by an opponent. Latos fanned 12 Hooks over 5.1 innings in a June 15, 2009 start at Wolff Municipal Stadium. In that game, Latos was perfect through four innings, striking out nine. He ended up being the losing pitcher that night.

15 Ks not the most

Hooks hitters struck out a total of 15 times last night. That's not a record this season. The high-water mark for strikeouts by the Hooks in one game this year is 16 - and it's happened twice (June 6 vs. Arkansas and June 18 vs. Frisco). Hooks hitters have fanned 12 or more times in seven games this season.

Three-homer game

The Hooks have now gone back-to-back games hitting three home runs, giving the team three such games this season. Corpus Christi has seven HRs this series and 12 HRs this home stand.

Three in a row

The Hooks have now won three in a row for the third time this season. The other two occasions were May 2-4 and May 20-22. The Hooks are the only team in the Texas League this season that has yet to string together four consecutive wins.

Bullpen string continues

Corpus Christi's bullpen had some tenuous moments last night, as the RoughRiders stranded six runners over the final three innings. But, Blake King and Arcenio Leon held the line, combining for three shutout frames. In five games this half, Hooks relievers have not allowed a run over 18 and two-thirds innings. Seven different relievers have contributed to the streak.
