Four-Run Ninth Leads Tribe to Victory

Indianapolis Indians News Release

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Eduardo Vera tossed 6.0 shutout frames in his Triple-A debut, and Ke'Bryan Hayes laced a two-run double to complete a four-run ninth inning as Indy avoided a four-game sweep with a 5-2 win on Sunday in Columbus.

Trailing 2-1 going into its final at-bat, Indianapolis (1-3) used a little drama to secure its first win of the 2019 campaign. Columbus (3-1) summoned three different pitchers in the ninth as six of the first seven batters reached via walk, base hit or error.

Eric Wood worked a walk to begin the inning and took second on a single by Trayvon Robinson. After pinch hitter Patrick Kivlehan went down swinging, Jake Elmore bested Nick Wittgren during an eight-pitch at-bat, lining a game-tying single into right-center.

The Tribe then turned to their 22-year-old duo atop the order. Cole Tucker put Indy in front for good when Clippers second baseman Yu Chang misplayed a ground ball to his right, scoring Robinson, and Hayes split the right-center gap with his second double of the game to make it 5-2.

Montana DuRapau (S, 1) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for the save.

Vera, 24, looked comfortable in his Tribe debut. He bookended the first with strikeouts and had five of his six punchouts through the first three innings. Consecutive one-out singles for Columbus in the third were erased on a nifty 2-5-3 double play started by Steven Baron.

The Indians scored first for the third time in the series on a two-out double by Kevin Kramer in the fourth, plating Bryan Reynolds who had previously singled.

Vera ran with the lead for three more frames, retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced before turning over to Clay Holmes in the seventh. Vera scattered three hits and one walk in the outing.

Columbus greeted Holmes out of the 'pen with a pair of unearned runs on two hits and an error that set up the rally. Chang hit a soft grounder between the mound and first base that Holmes fielded and flipped to first base where nobody was covering. The miscue gave Chang second base and two deep fly balls later, the game was level at 1-1. Brandon Barnes then bunted for a two-out hit, advanced to second on a walk and scored on a Trayce Thompson single up the middle.

Brandon Maurer (W, 1-0) hurled a scoreless eighth to keep the Tribe within striking distance. Henry Martinez (L, 1-1) was tagged with the loss.

Elmore and Hayes accounted for half of Indy's eight hits. Elmore is batting a team-best .545 (6-for-11) on the young season.

Following a day off on Monday, the Indians open a brief two-game series in Toledo on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
