Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SAN ANTONIO - The Missions scored four times in the fifth inning Sunday night via two triples and a two-run home run as San Antonio rolled to a 7-4 victory over the Hooks at Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Corpus Christi (38-24) now leads Frisco by two games in the Texas League South with eight to play.

The home team made up for lost time following a one-hour rain delay. In the first, Everett Williams notched the first of five San Antonio two-out RBIs with a double down the left field line off Bobby Doran.

The Hooks answered immediately. Domingo Santana opened the second with a walk and Erik Castro and Jonathan Meyer belted back-to-back home runs, staking Corpus Christi to a 3-1 advantage.

Meyer boasts a club-best 13-game hitting streak.

Doran kept the Missions (33-28) off the board thru the next two frames before running into trouble in the fourth. Williams cracked a one-out double to right field and came home on a two-bagger to left by Chris Bisson. Rocky Gale evened the score in the next at-bat with a line-drive single to right.

San Antonio starter Keyvius Sampson (3-4) would again fall victim to the long ball. George Springer gave Corpus Christi the lead right back with a solo shot to left-center field. Springer, who now leads the minors with 18 home runs, has 50 RBIs and 18 stolen bases on the season.

Doran gave way to lefty Sergio Escalona who coughed up all four runs in the fifth. Lead-off hitter Adam Buschini stroked a liner toward right fielder Justin Maxwell who made a lunging attempt for the catch. The ball sailed past him and rolled safely to the wall for a triple. Rico Noel then hit a line drive to left field. The charging Santana misjudged its trajectory and over ran the ball for another triple.

With the infield drawn in and the scored tied at four, Escalona (0-1) got two ground outs and jumped ahead of Williams 1-2, but the Missions left fielder recorded his third hit of the night, an RBI single over the bag at second. A.J. Kirby-Jones delivered the big blow in the next at-bat with a two-run blast onto the berm in left.

Ryan Kelly, Jeremy McBryde, Matt Stites and Kevin Quackenbush each logged a scoreless frame of relief for San Antonio. The quartet struck out six and did not walk a batter, holding the Hooks to a pair of hits past the fifth. Quackenbush, who owns an ERA of 0.31, authored his league-leading 12th save.

Nick Tropeano closed out the game for Corpus Christi with three scoreless frames. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five.

The Hooks send Ruben Alaniz (2-5, 5.37) to the hill in Game 3 of the series Monday night. San Antonio counters with Matt Wisler (2-2, 4.33 ERA). First pitch is 7:05.
