Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - The Tulsa Drillers edged the Springfield Cardinals, 5-3, before 4,629 fans at ONEOK Field on Monday afternoon.
Springfield (30-31) got the scoring going in the top of the second inning against LHP Tyler Matzek (W, 3-5) and the Drillers. On at first base with two down and LHP Nick Greenwood at the plate, 2B Luis Mateo swiped his way to second base. Matzek then uncorked a wild pitch, and Mateo took off for third base. C Jose Gonzalez tried to throw Mateo out at third, but fired an errant throw to left field, enabling Mateo to pop up and score the game's first run for the 1-0 Cardinals lead.
The Drillers (30-32), though, took advantage of a Springfield miscue in the bottom of the second. With runners at first and second and one away, Greenwood (L, 1-4) induced a grounder to third base. 3B Ruben Gotay made the stop, but threw wide of second base, allowing all runners to be safe and 2B Angelys Nina to score on the play, tying the game at 1-1.
Tulsa cracked the tie in the bottom of the fourth. After a single by RF Kent Matthes led off the inning, Nina drove a two-run homer over the right field wall, swinging the Drillers ahead, 3-1.
The Cardinals chipped down the deficit in the top of the fifth inning. CF James Ramsey started the frame with a double tucked just inside the left field line. After moving to third base on a fly out by Gotay, Ramsey darted home on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field by RF Chris Swauger, bringing the Cardinals within one run, 3-2.
However, the Drillers widened the gap back out in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one away, Gonzalez swung his way to second base with a double, before LF Delta Cleary, Jr. followed with an RBI single. After a base hit and a strikeout, SS Cristhian Adames knocked an RBI single to plate Cleary, Jr. for the 5-2 advantage.
Springfield again chipped away in the top of the eighth inning. Leading off the inning, 1B Xavier Scruggs belted a double into the left field corner. After a SS Jake Lemmerman base hit moved Scruggs to third, he then scored on an RBI fielder's choice that was blooped to shallow center field by Mateo, making it 5-3.
RHP Dan Houston worked out of the rest of the eighth in scoreless fashion by inducing a double play, before RHP Cole White (S, 3) tossed a scoreless ninth to close the 5-3 win for Tulsa.
