Soo Greyhounds News Release
PETERBOROUGH, ON- The Soo Greyhounds responded within seconds of a first period deficit and would then run the table with four unanswered goals on Thursday to extend their winning streak to a season high four games.
At the same time the club moved back to the .500 mark with a record of 13-13-3-0.
"The first I was pleased to get out of it 1-1. I didn't think we were very good. Again we started slow, we weren't really moving our feet. Our forwards didn't seem engaged in the game early on. We gave up some shorthanded chances from forwards not being aware" began Head Coach Drew Bannister.
"After the first we started to play to our advantage and the way we like to play. We start to use our speed against their guys. Certainly being short, taking Zach and Timmy out of our lineup, we had some guys step up and playing really well" he added.
In the start of a three-game roadtrip, it would be the Peterborough Petes opening the scoring 2:55 into the first period.
With play in the Petes zone, a bounce in the corner to the left of goaltender Matthew Mancina started off a play that resulted in a 2-on-1 for Peterborough where Josh Maguire notched his 21st goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the home side.
That lead would last just twenty-seconds before the Hounds would tie the game.
Captain BLAKE SPEERS would skate the puck into the zone before dishing the puck off to GUSTAV BOURAMMAN for the right point shot. There standing in front was GABE GUERTLER who would put home his second chance at the puck to tie the game 1-1.
For Guerlter, it was his 1st goal in nine games played for the overage forward.
Neither side would capitalize further as the Petes edged the shot clock 13-10 after the first period.
The penalty-free second period began with the Petes Zach Gallant redirecting the puck off the iron behind BRANDON HALVERSON while the game remain tied.
At 7:44, centreman LIAM HAWEL notched his 1st career OHL goal to give the Greyhounds their first and only lead needed on the night.
KEIGAN GOETZ broke in on the left wing before passing the puck back where HAWEL fired home the 2-1 lead, while the second assist went to COLTON WHITE.
Before the midway point of the period the Hounds already short line-up when shorter after BORIS KATCHOUK appeared to go ackwardly into the endboards and didn't return for the remainder of the period. The Kitchener, ON product would return for the third period.
With under five to go, MORGAN FROST tipped a COLTON WHITE shot in a late chance for the Hounds while at the other end of the ice BRANDON HALVERSON turned aside all eleven shots he faced in the period and 43 of 44 he faced on the night enroute to 1st star honours.
"He was very good. He made the saves that we needed him to and offensively we were opportunistic in our chances that we had" said Bannister.
With six minutes gone in the third period the Hounds line of KEIGAN GOETZ, MORGAN FROST and JACK KOPACKA buzzed around the Petes goal with multiple chances to extend the lead and build momentum for the Hounds.
Then at 7:46 a turnover saw the puck get to BLAKE SPEERS who went blocker side for his 8th goal of the season and a 3-1 Greyhound lead.
The goal assisted by GABE GUERTLER, marked the third consecutive game with a goal for the Sault Ste. Marie product (Speers).
The game got physical both ways in the final ten minutes as the teams pressed for further offense.
With exactly two minutes to play, and Mancina on the bench for the extra attacker for the Petes, BOBBY MACINTYRE skated the puck to neutral ice before passing to SPEERS who sealed the victory with his 9th goal of the season into an empty net and a 4-1 Greyhounds victory.
"I'm happy with the lineup and the youth we had in the lineup and guys playing in certain situations against an older team. You have to walk away pretty happy" continued Bannister.
"It's the right time. We are starting to get some bounces our way and build some confidence and certainly offensively we're creating and taking advantage of those chances and our goaltending is getting to where it should be" he concluded.
