D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (December 20, 2005) - U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bruce Arena has called four members of D.C. United into the team's January World Cup training camp - Freddy Adu, Brian Carroll, Ben Olsen and Santino Quaranta. The training camp will begin Jan. 4 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. and includes 30 total players, only one of which is not from MLS. The group will prepare for a series of friendlies to take place in January and February.
"We wish our four players the best of luck in the January training camp and in making the 2006 World Cup roster," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper.
The U.S. will open 2006 action against Canada on Jan. 22 in San Diego (5 p.m. PT), then host Norway on Jan. 29 at The Home Depot Center (2 p.m. PT, ESPN2). The U.S. will play Japan for only the second time in history when they meet at SBC Park on Feb. 10 in San Francisco. The USA's first match in the city in 26 years kicks off at 8 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
The call-up is the first for Adu, who has seen extensive time as a member of the U.S. youth national teams. Adu made nine total appearances (seven starts) with the U-20 Men's National Team in 2005, notching three goals and one assist. His time with the U-20's included four games at the FIFA World Youth Championships. The 16-year old made 25 appearances (16 starts) for United in 2005, contributing four goals and six assists.
Carroll made his first-ever appearance with the full Men's National Team in the country's World Cup qualifying finale, a 2-0 win over Panama on October 12. The 24-year old started and played the full match. He also played the full 90 in the team's friendly with Scotland on Nov. 11. Carroll was the only United player to see time in every regular season match during 2005. He notched his first career goal and three assists during the season.
Olsen made four appearances (two starts) for the U.S. during its Gold Cup championship run in July, while also seeing time in the U.S.'s friendly with Scotland. During his career, Olsen has made 27 total appearances with the full U.S. team, including 10 appearances during 2000. He was on the field 23 times for the Black-and-Red (22 starts) in 2005, contributing two goals and four assists.
Quaranta made nine total appearances for the U.S. Men in 2005, primarily on the right side of midfield. He saw time in four games during the team's Gold Cup championship run and has seen the field in four World Cup qualifiers, which included going the full 90 in the final match versus Panama. Quaranta made 18 appearances for United in 2005, and was third on the team with five goals, while notching five assists.
The USA was drawn into Group E for the 2006 FIFA World Cup along with the Czech Republic, Ghana, and Italy. The U.S. plays their opening match against the Czechs on June 12 in Gelsenkirchen at 12 p.m. ET. Five days later, the USA faces Italy in Kaiserslautern, and then finishes off group play against Ghana on June 22 in Nuremberg. The U.S. has chosen the northern port city of Hamburg as their base of operations throughout the tournament.
