Crew Assistant Coach Eduardo Carvacho Retained By Head Coach Sigi Schmid

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Tuesday, December 20) - Columbus Crew Head Coach Sigi Schmid announced today that Eduardo "Eddie" Carvacho has been retained as The Crew's goalkeeper coach.

"Eddie worked very well with the goalkeepers last year," said Schmid. "His continued work and continuity with the goalkeepers will be very beneficial for the team as we move forward."

Carvacho just completed his first season as an assistant coach with Columbus after getting hired on Jan. 27, 2005.

"It is another fantastic opportunity for my career to learn from one of the best coaches in the United States," said Carvacho. "I am grateful that Coach Schmid has retained me as part of his coaching staff and I am ready to provide him support in any area of need. To remain within the Crew organization makes it even better."

FOUR CREW PLAYERS CALLED-IN TO U.S. NATIONAL TEAM CAMP

U.S. Men's National Team manager Bruce Arena has named four Crew players to the 30-player training camp roster that will begin workouts Jan. 4 at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif. The group will prepare for a series of friendlies to take place in January and February. The four Crew players named to the roster are defender/midfielder Frankie Hejduk, defender Chad Marshall, midfielder Kyle Martino and goalkeeper Jonny Walker.

The U.S. will open 2006 action against Canada on Jan. 22 in San Diego (5 p.m. PT), then host Norway on Jan. 29 at The Home Depot Center (2 p.m. PT, ESPN2). The U.S. will play Japan for the second time in history when they meet at SBC Park on Feb. 10 in San Francisco. The USA's first match in the city in 26 years kicks off at 8 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

The U.S. will play two friendlies in March, including a visit to three-time World Cup champions Germany. The 2002 FIFA World Cup runners up will host the U.S. on March 22, 2006, in Dortmund, Germany, one off 12 cities hosting matches in the tournament next summer. Kickoff at the Westfalenstadion is set for 8 p.m. in Germany (2 p.m. ET), and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN.

The USA was drawn into Group E for the 2006 FIFA World Cup along with the Czech Republic, Ghana, and Italy. The U.S. plays their opening match against the Czechs on June 12 in Gelsenkirchen at 12 p.m. ET. Five days later, the USA faces Italy in Kaiserslautern, and then finishes off group play against Ghana on June 22 in Nuremberg. The U.S. has chosen the northern port city of Hamburg as their base of operations throughout the tournament.

CREW SEASON OPENER SET FOR APRIL 1 AND HOME OPENER ON APRIL 15

The Crew will open the 2006 MLS season on the road on Saturday, April 1, at Kansas City. The national television schedule has not yet been finalized, so the start time for the game on April 1 has not been set.

The Crew home opener is set for Saturday, April 15, vs. the Eastern Conference rival Chicago Fire. That start time is also not set. Major League Soccer kicks off its 11th season on Saturday, April 1. The complete 2006 schedule will be announced at a later date.

PASION DE GOL SET FOR THURSDAY AT 5 P.M. ON RADIO SOL, 1550-AM

Crew Assistant Coach Eduardo Carvacho hosts Pasion de Gol (Passion for Goals), an hour-long soccer show every Thursday from 5-6 p.m. on Spanish radio station Radio Sol, 1550-AM. Radio Sol is also the Spanish radio play-by-play home for all Crew home games. The show is geared toward The Crew and Major League Soccer, as well as the numerous Hispanic players, coaches and administrators around the league and country.
