Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The TinCaps swept a doubleheader against the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs) on Saturday night at Four Winds Field. With the victories, Fort Wayne moved back into position for the Midwest League Eastern Division's second half wild card.
In Game 1, the makeup of a postponed game at Parkview Field on Friday, Aug. 17, the TinCaps came from behind to prevail, 3-2. In Game 2, the 'Caps staved off a late Cubs rally to prevail again by a 3-2 count.
Fort Wayne (29-32, 61-69), which entered the night on a season-worst six-game losing streak, trailed 2-1 entering the seventh in Game 1 (MiLB doubleheader games are only scheduled to go seven innings rather than nine). Jack Suwinski led off the seventh with a single to center field. Gabriel Arias followed that with a game-tying double off the wall in left-center field. Esteury Ruiz advanced Arias to third base with a sacrifice bunt and Jalen Washington delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center field.
Dan Dallas closed the game out in the bottom of the seventh inning for his first save with the team. Fred Schlichtholz struck out five batters in 1 2/3 hitless innings of relief, bridging Dallas with the starter Mason Thompson, who also had five Ks in 4 1/3 innings.
Olivier Basabe was responsible for the TinCaps' first run with a solo homer in the fourth inning. That tied the game, 1-1.
South Bend (27-35, 61-70) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first and answered with a solo home run of its own in the home fourth from Jimmy Herron.
In Game 2, catcher Michael Cantu gave the TinCaps a 1-0 lead in the second as he doubled to score Ruiz, who'd been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Jeisson Rosario and Cantu both hit solo homers in the fourth to increase the 'Caps lead to 3-0.
The Cubs scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Reiss Knehr started and tossed three scoreless innings while Evan Miller followed with three shutout frames of his own. Dylan Coleman earned a three-out save.
