Kane County Cougars News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Iowa has been anything but heaven for the Kane County Cougars (33-29, 68-63) as the Cedar Rapids Kernels (40-23, 72-60) won the third game of a four-game series. The Kernels' 10-4 win stretched the Cougars' losing streak to four games fresh off a six-game winning streak. Beloit's loss keeps the Snappers even with the Cougars in the standings for the wild card lead with seven games left.

Cedar Rapids scored in the first inning for their third straight game when Ryan Jeffers singled home Gabriel Maciel off of Mack Lemieux (4-10). Lemieux found more trouble serving up a sacrifice fly to Ben Rodriguez and a two-run homer to Jacob Pearson for a 4-0 Kernels lead.

After Cedar Rapids picked up another run in the fourth, the Cougars saw their first signs of offense in the third thanks to an RBI single from Yoel Yanqui and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Grotjohn.

The Kernels offense picked back up in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and an error.

Tyler Watson (5-6) earned his third quality start of the year with seven innings of two-run baseball. Watson settled in after giving up two runs and three walks through three. He faced two over the minimum with eight strikeouts in the final four innings.

Eudy Ramos provided some late offense with a two-run homer in the ninth for the Cougars final scoring play.

The Cougars look to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Monday. Cole Bartlett (5-2, 3.67) will take the mound against Cedar Rapids' Randy Dobnak (9-5, 3.23). First pitch from Veterans Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Coverage on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com begins at 6:20 p.m.
