Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a pair of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's games against the Montgomery Biscuits at Bragan Field at 5:05 p.m.
Right-handed pitcher and former major leaguer Micah Owings has been transferred to Jacksonville from rookie level Batavia. The 31-year-old Owings was signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent in early April and has been at extended Spring Training in Jupiter.
Owings will start for the Suns in game two of today's doubleheader with the Biscuits. He'll be opposed by Biscuits left-hander Jimmy Patterson (2-0, 3.78 ERA).
In his career, Owings has pitched in 138 major league games with 68 starts, going 32-33 with a 4.86 ERA in 483 innings. Owings has pitched with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2007-2008, 2011), Cincinnati Reds (2009-10), and the San Diego Padres (2012). In his last season pitching for the Padres in 2012 he had a 2.79 ERA in six appearances while going 0-2.
Owings has also been an effective hitter in his time in the big leagues, owning a career .283 batting average with nine home runs and 35 RBI in parts of six seasons.
Last year Owings was an outfielder in the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals organizations. This included time in the Southern League with the Huntsville Stars, where he hit .195 with no homers or RBI in 22 games. He also pitched in six games in relief for the Stars, with no wins or losses and he didn't allow an earned run in six innings on the mound. He did not face the Suns in 2013.
Owings came up through the Southern League when he was in the Diamondbacks organization, pitching for the Tennessee Smokies in 2006 where he was 6-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 12 starts. In his 2006 season he never faced the Suns. Owings was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the third round of the 2005 draft out of Tulane.
Additionally the Marlins announced that infielder Ryan Rieger has been reinstated from Jacksonville's disabled list and transferred to High-A Jupiter. Rieger was placed on the disabled list on April 3 with a left shoulder dislocation that he suffered on Opening Night while sliding into third on an RBI triple, and he is 1-for-1 this season.
The Suns roster now stands at 25 active players and a revised roster is attached.
First pitch of game one for today's doubleheader set for 5:05 ET at Bragan Field. Game two will start roughly 35-45 minutes following the completion of Tuesday's game one.
