Former Major Leaguer Randy Keisler Signs With Pelicans

The Pensacola Pelicans have signed Randy Keisler, a former 2nd rounder with the New York Yankees and has pitched for four other major league clubs as well. Keisler spent two years with the Yankees before playing for San Diego, Cincinnati, Oakland, and St. Louis from 2003-2007.

Keisler was a highly touted prospect in the Yankees farm system in the late 90s and early 00s. He made his major league debut in 2000 on the Yankees team that would eventually defeat the Mets in the 2000 World Series. His pro debut came on September 10th, 2000 against the Boston Red Sox. He started the game and picked up the win after going 5 innings allowing only 1 run and striking out 2.

His best pro season came in 2005 for the Cincinnati Reds in which he pitched in 24 games and was 2-1 with 43 strikeouts. His final MLB season came in 2007 with the St. Louis Cardinals where he started 3 games and pitched in 4.

He pitched in 55 games in the majors and started 20 of them. He is 4-4 with 150 innings logged in the majors and struck out 100.

In 2008 he began season with Triple-A Iowa (4-6, 3.14 ERA, 12 games, 11 starts, 66 innings, 65 Ks, 26 walks). He made his final 10 appearances of season for Triple-A Norfolk. During the 2008 season he spent time with the Twins, Cubs and Orioles' organizations.

Keisler was born in Texas and was a highly scouted amateur. He was drafted 4 times into the MLB, finally signing in 1998 when the Yankees made him the 67th overall pick. His career almost was derailed when he severely injured his arm and had to have Tommy John surgery. He recovered and stared for LSU before being drafted and signed by the Yankees.
