Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - In a game that had a little bit of everything - lots of offense, great clutch pitching, some bizarre plays, an ejection and 41 total hits - the Shreveport-Bossier Captains beat the Pensacola Pelicans 10-9 in 14 innings on a very simple play - a clean single up the middle by Jovanny Rosario, sending a Memorial Day crowd of 618 home happy, as the Captains took the series with the Pelicans two of three.
Uriak Marquez, who had four hits and four RBIs, including two game-tying hits in the ninth and 11th innings, started the bottom of the 14th with a clean single off the weary Joey Wedner (0-2). After Bryan Sabatella struck out on three foul bunt attempts, Marquez broke for second with Rosario at the plate. Catcher Lou Palmisano double-clutched and then threw the ball into center field, allowing Marquez to go to third. After a conference on the mound, Rosario lined the next pitch to center, starting a celebration behind the mound at Fair Grounds Field.
The offensive onslaught started early, as Pensacola leadoff man Francisco Leandro began the game with a base hit. After a sacrifice bunt, Antoin Gray doubled - the first of his four hits - to give the Pelicans (6-11) the early lead. A single and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0, before the Pelicans got an unearned run off Chad Linder in the second.
Shreveport-Bossier (9-8) got a run back in the fifth on an RBI infield single by the hustling Jorge Alvarez, but starter Jared Gothreaux got out of that inning without any further damage. The Pelicans chased Linder with three two-out runs in the sixth, but the Captains came right back to chase Gothreaux with two in the sixth. However, a larger rally was squashed when Marquez was called out for not retouching third on a pop fly by Rosario, leading to the first ejection of the year for Captains manager Ricky VanAsselberg.
Undeterred by their skipper's ejection, the Captains got two in the eighth on RBIs by Sabatella and Christopher Garcia against Ron Hill and Tyler Wilson. But they headed to the ninth down by two, as Alonso homered off Chris Kelly in the seventh to make it 7-5.
Bryan Frichter began the bottom of the ninth with a double off the wall in left-center against Wilson, before Palmer Karr singled him in. Andres Rodriguez singled to put the tying run aboard, but Karr was forced out at third on Brian Peterson's sacrifice attempt. Not to be deterred, Marquez stroked a single to right-center, as Rodriguez hustled home and just beat the tag of Lou Palmisano with a feet-first slide to tie the game.
Jameson Maj pitched the ninth and began the 10th, but Cody Railsback had to come in for him with two outs and two on. The righty gave up a single to Adolfo Gonzalez, but Sabatella cut down Chase Porch at the plate to keep the game tied. But in the 11th, Railsback gave up his first runs of the year, after a single, a walk and an infield hit loaded the bases with two outs. Railsback walked Joey Side to force in a run, and then hit Porch to make it 9-7.
However, Wedner hit Karr to start the bottom of the 11th, and after a single by Rodriguez and a successful sacrifice by Peterson, Marquez hit a double to right to tie it again.
Rookie Matt Carter (1-0) went the final three innings for the Captains to earn the win, giving up just two walks and getting a double play in the top of the 14th to end the inning.
Notes: The Captains set a new season high with 24 hits a day after setting the old mark at 16...11 players had at least two hits in the game, led by Karr's five, and four each from Marquez, Garcia and Gray...Marcos Rodriguez (0-for-7) of Pensacola was the only starter not to get a hit.
