ST. PAUL, Minn. - Big or small, the Sioux Falls Pheasants find ways to win. The Pheasants cracked 13 singles against the St. Paul Saints on Sunday night in a 6-2 win in the rubber game of a three-game series.
The first-place Sioux Falls club improved to 12-4, the best record in the American Association.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, the Pheasants took the lead for good on a bases-loaded, one-out single from Beau Torbert that plated Tim Hutting and Joe Anthonsen. Torbert was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. He extended his hitting streak to nine games.
The Pheasants added two runs in the seventh off four straight hits. Trevor Lawhorn had an RBI double and Hunter Jobes had a run-scoring single.
Pheasants starter Chris Salberg (3-0) pitched masterfully. After walking the leadoff hitter and giving up a single to begin the ballgame, he retired the next eleven batters. Salberg allowed two runs and scattered just four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
The only major trouble Salberg faced was a bases-loaded one out jam in the sixth with the Pheasants leading 4-1. Brent Krause knocked in one run on a fielder's choice, and Salberg induced a ground-ball force out from Gerard Haran to end the inning.
The Pheasants bullpen pitched a scoreless 2 1/3 innings to finish the ballgame.
Jacob Schmidt (2-1) took the loss. He gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings. He walked six and struck out six.
The Pheasants return home Tuesday, June 1 to begin a six-game home stand. They face the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. It's a Double Play Tuesday. Fans can purchase two grandstand seats for the price of one.
The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
