Former Gold Medal Winning Coach Comes to Wichita
April 20, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - The Wichita Thunder, proud member of the ECHL and powered by Toyota, are excited to announce that former Head Coach of the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team, Daniele Sauvageau, has been selected to help coach the Wichita Force Hockey Team. She will work with the squad all the way up until the rematch of the Police vs. Fire game that will take place on Sunday, April 24th at 10 a.m. at the Wichita Ice Center.
Sauvageau helped Team Canada to the gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. She was a part of the IIHF Ambassador and Mentor Program that traveled to Bratislava, Slovakia to participate in the 2011 IIHF High Performance Women's camp. Sauvageau was the first female coach in QMJHL history as she was hired by the Montreal Rocket in 1999-2000.
The Wichita Force, comprised of a group of local members of the Wichita Police Department, started their practice sessions on April 19th and will conclude on April 23rd. The Force were selected by the International Olympic Committee to participate in a special eight-part TV series that will be launched after the Rio Games.
The hope of this series is to empower and motivate both teams and potentially their communities. It will also explore the importance of hockey in each team member's life by spending time with them in their daily lives, interacting with friends, family, colleagues at home, college or work.
Admission to the rematch will be free, with any donations being accepted to help benefit the Wichita Children's Home. Wichita Youth Hockey will also be a part of the festivities as there will be exhibition games during intermissions.
Season ticket holders can now renew their seats for the upcoming 2016-17 season. Put down your $50 deposit per seat and pay it off all summer long. Contact a Thunder representative at the office today.
