Former Canary pitches Fort Worth to 3-1 win

Sioux Falls, SD - Former Canary Cory Walters pitched The Fort Worth Cats (24-11) to a 3-1 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries (14-20) on Saturday night at the Birdcage. Walters pitched seven innings giving up one run on eight hits to lead the Cats to a three-game sweep of the Birds.

The Cats got on the board in the opening frame. Terence Green singled and stole second base. Green advanced to third on a single by Kip Harkrider, and scored when Justin Hatcher grounded into a double play. The early run put Fort Worth ahead, 1-0.

The Canaries tied the game in the third inning. David Hoffman doubled and scored on a single by Anthony Monegan to even the score, 1-1.

In the fourth inning, Abner Arroyo singled for his 100th hit of the season, and became the 11th Canary in team history to reach the century mark.

Marc Mirizzi led off the sixth inning with a double, and two outs later Chuck Carter doubled to score Mirizzi and put the Cats ahead 2-1.

The Cats added a final run in the seventh. Kip Harkrider doubled and scored when Tony Mota grounded into a double play.

Walters (12-4) got his league-leading 12th win of the season. Doug Johnson (5-7) returned from the disabled list and pitched well in taking the loss. Johnson struck out a season-high seven in six innings.

The Canaries will play the Sioux City Explorers in Sioux City, IA on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. The Birds will return home for a day game on August 15 at 11:30 a.m.
