Cubs Sign Machado

EL PASO - The El Paso Diablos, members of the American Association, have announced today, that the contract of short stop Albenis Machado has been purchased by the Chicago Cubs organization. Machado, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, was hitting .317 with 4 HR and 41 RBI's this 2006 season with the Diablos.

Machado was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos in 1996 where he remained until 2004 when he was granted free agency. Machado went on to play with the Lincoln Saltdogs, current members of the American Association. This was Machado's first year with the Diablos. He will be playing with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, the AA affiliate for the Chicago Cubs.

"As an organization we're excited for Albenis. He is a super kid and a consummate professional. This could not have happened to a better guy," said Matt La Branche, General Manager for the El Paso Diablos.

This is the second Diablos player this season to have their contract purchased by a Major League organization. First baseman Juan Camacho was signed by the Chicago White Sox on May 24 of this year.

The El Paso Diablos are members of the newly formed American Association of Professional Baseball. In 2005 the Diablos led the Central League in average attendance while averaging well over 4,000 fans each night at Cohen Stadium.
