Portland Beavers News Release

LAS VEGAS - Former Beaver Michael Barrett laced a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a three-run rally as the Las Vegas 51s beat the Portland Beavers 4-3 for the second straight night Friday at Cashman Field.

Barrett's single off Portland reliever Eulogio De La Cruz highlighted an eighth inning in which the 51s (29-40) scored three runs on four hits to counter the three-run eighth the Beavers (33-36) produced a half-inning earlier.

The game began as a pitchers' duel, with the Beavers managing just two hits in seven innings against 51s starter David Purcey. Beavers starter Tim Stauffer was impressive for the Beavers in his first Triple-A start this season, limiting Las Vegas to one run on four hits while striking out three and walking none in five innings.

Buck Coats, Russ Adams and Aaron Mathews each tallied a pair of hits for the 51s, who have won the first two games of the four-game series.

Brett Dowdy had a pair of singles and Craig Stansberry extended his hitting streak to seven games for the Beavers, who have lost five of their last six games.

Brian Wolfe (1-1) blew the 51s' eighth-inning lead but pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win.

De La Cruz (0-2) took the loss for Portland after allowing Barrett's go-ahead single.

The 51s got on the board in the third inning, when, with two outs, Angel Sanchez and Coats singled off Stauffer. Sanchez then scored on Adams' RBI double to left, giving Las Vegas the 1-0 lead.

In relief of Purcey, Bubby Buzachero loaded the bases full of Beavers to start the eighth without recording an out, issuing walks to Sean Kazmar and Mike Baxter which sandwiched a single by Brett Dowdy. Brian Wolfe then came on to issue the game-tying walk to Stansberry. After Chad Huffman struck out, Vincent Sinisi hit a hard ground ball off Wolfe's glove and the 51s pitcher had no play as the Beavers took the lead. Baxter then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Drew Macias to put the Beavers up 3-1.

The 51s would reclaim their lead in the bottom of the eighth with their three-run rally. Leadoff singles by Coats and Adams set up an RBI groundout by David Dellucci. After a two-out intentional walk and infield single, Barrett gave the 51s the lead for good with his two-run single up the middle.

Jonah Bayliss came in to record the final out, a flyout by Stansberry, to earn his second save of the season.

The Beavers and 51s continue their four-game series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. (Pacific).
