Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today recalled Portland left-handed pitcher Wade LeBlanc, selected first baseman Kyle Blanks and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo and announced they have reinstated infielder Everth Cabrera from the 60-day disabled list. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer was transferred to Portland from Class AA San Antonio and will start tonight for the Beavers. The Padres also announced that left-handed pitcher Arturo Lopez has been claimed off waivers by the New York Mets. Catcher Luis Martinez was transferred to Portland from Class A Lake Elsinore while right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hefner, who started for the Beavers Thursday, was transferred to Lake Elsinore.
LeBlanc, 24, has pitched in 11 games (10 starts) for Portland this season, going 1-4 with a 4.08 ERA (26er, 57.1ip) and 47 strikeouts. He made his major league debut with the Padres in 2008, appearing in five games (4 starts). With San Diego, he went 1-3 with an 8.02 ERA (19er, 21.1ip) and 14 strikeouts.
Blanks, 22, has played in 66 games for the Beavers this season, hitting .283 (66-for-233) with nine doubles, 12 home runs, 38 RBIs and 35 runs scored. He led the Beavers in hits, RBIs, runs scored and walks (39) while tying for the team lead in home runs at the time of his selection. Blanks was named the Padres Minor League Player of the Year and Topps Texas League Player of the Year in 2008 after hitting .325 with 20 home runs and 107 RBIs in 132 games with Class AA San Antonio.
Alfonzo, 30, batted .306 (45-for-147) with eight doubles, 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 18 runs scored in 41 games for the Beavers this season. The veteran catcher has played in 118 major league games over three seasons with the San Francisco Giants (2006-08), batting .258 (93-for-361) with 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, 46 RBIs and 32 runs scored in his career.
Cabrera, a 2008 Rule 5 draft pick of the Padres from Colorado, started the season with San Diego, hitting .308 (4-for-13) with four runs scored in six games before being placed on the 60-day disabled list April 20 with a fractured left hand. The 22-year-old played in seven rehab games with Lake Elsinore, batting .391 (9-for-23) with four RBIs, seven runs and four stolen bases, before being transferred to Portland June 11. With the Beavers, Cabrera played seven games, batting .333 (9-for-27) with two doubles, five runs scored and a stolen base.
Stauffer, 27, was 1-0 with one save and a 1.89 ERA (4er, 19.0ip) in 12 games with San Antonio to start the season. Stauffer is 24-25 with a 4.74 ERA (232er, 440.1ip) and 299 strikeouts in 73 starts over four seasons with the Beavers (2004-07) and is the team's career leader (since the team returned in 2001) in wins, starts and innings pitched, while ranking second in strikeouts. The Padres' first round pick in 2003, Stauffer missed the entire 2008 campaign with a strained right shoulder and underwent surgery in May 2008 to repair his right labrum.
Lopez, 26, made his major league debut this season with San Diego, posting a 19.29 ERA (5er, 2.1ip) in four relief appearances. The left-hander has made 20 relief appearances with Portland this season a 3.77 ERA (13er, 31.0ip) while striking out 23, and was 0-3 with a 6.44 ERA (31er, 43.1ip) in 23 career appearances (3 starts) with the Beavers from 2008-09.
Martinez, 24, batted .290 (47-for-162) with 12 doubles, two home runs, 16 RBIs and 21 runs scored in 46 games for Lake Elsinore.
Hefner, 23, gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five across 5 1/3 innings while not factoring in the decision in his Triple-A debut for the Beavers Thursday at Las Vegas.
With the moves, the Beavers' active roster is now at 22 players.
Also on Friday, the Padres placed outfielder Cliff Floyd, catcher Nick Hundley and right-handed pitcher Chris Young on the disabled list and announced that shortstop Josh Wilson has been claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners.
