Oklahoma City Comets News Release
TONIGHT:
The Oklahoma City RedHawks take on the Nashville Sounds in Game 2 of a 4-game series at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. OKC won the opener 8-7 in 11 innings last night. The RedHawks lead the season series with Nashville 3-2. The Sounds have the second-best record in the PCL at 40-28 and lead the American North Division by 4 games over Iowa. OKC is third in the American South, 2.5 games back of Albuquerque. Righthander Elizardo Ramirez gets the start for OKC, his first of 2009 against Nashville. Lefty Chris Cody will make his third Triple-A start tonight and first against the RedHawks.
OVERTIME AGAIN:
On Wednesday, Nashville and OKC concluded their previous series by each playing 11-inning games. Last night, they toiled through a second straight 11-inning game, this time against each other, with the RedHawks winning in last at-bat fashion 8-7 on Nate Gold's pinch-hit, RBI double. The 4-hour, 8-minute game was OKC's longest of the year, time-wise, a day after a 3-hour, 50-minute marathon in a loss to Iowa. OKC had a pair of 1-run leads and Nashville twice had 2-run advantages, only to see the game tied by the Sounds 6-6 in the seventh. Both teams recorded a blown save at various points in the contest. Nashville took a 7-6 lead in the 11th on a Brendan Katin triple, but OKC rallied against former RedHawk Sam Narron in the bottom of the 11th. Max Ramirez and Emerson Frostad singled to begin the inning, followed by Royce Huffman's RBI single. Gold batted for Casey Benjamin and doubled into the left field corner to produce the winning run and pin a loss on Narron (0-2). Beau Vaughan (4-2) picked up the win by retiring the only batter he faced to end the top of the 11th.
VAUGHAN TO FRISCO:
Reliever Beau Vaughan has been transferred to Double-A Frisco. A counter move has not yet been made to bring OKC's roster to the allotted 24.
REACH FOR THE RECORD BOOK:
Last night's game matched 3 season highs. OKC's 18 hits equaled the most in a game this season, tying the team mark set June 7 at Albuquerque. RedHawks pitchers struck out 12 Sounds, also matching the season high from May 13 and April 11. The RedHawks committed 3 errors, joining 3-error games May 7 and April 17.
A RARITY:
The RedHawks had gone 28 games without a multi-error game until yesterday. Their last previous multiple-error game was the nightcap of a doubleheader May 18 vs. Tacoma.
BORBON STREAKING:
Julio Borbon is on a 6-game hitting streak and has recorded multiple hits in each of his last 4 games. During the 6-game streak, Borbon is 11-for-29 (.379) with 2 RBIs. Borbon has hit safely in 11of his last 12 games, with 8 multi-hit games in that span.
DOT...DOT...DOT:
Joaquin Arias has hit safely in 10 of his last 11...he has collected back-to-back 3-hit games...Julio Borbon and Esteban German share the club lead in stolen bases with 18. German has gone 12 games without a stolen base and has 1 steal in his last 21 games. German has gone 14 games without being caught stealing...German is fourth in the PCL in on-base percentage at .429 and third in walks with 43...last night's blown save in the seventh inning was OKC's first at home since May 3 and its first anywhere in June.
SHOWDOWN ON ESPN2:
The fourth Bricktown Showdown at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark will take place Sept. 22 at 6:05 p.m. CDT and will once again be televised live on ESPN2. The Bricktown Showdown is a one-game Triple-A Championship matching the playoff champions of the PCL and the International League.
