OMAHA, Neb. - The Fargo Force defeated the Omaha Lancers 6-3 tonight in what was the first contest between the two teams so far this season.
Cole Knuble struck first for the Force just a minute and eight seconds into the opening frame. He carried the puck from the opposite blue line to the Lancers doorstep firing home a wide-open shot in the slot to the Omaha Netminder's stick side for his ninth goal of the year. Both teams saw quality chances, but the score remained locked in at 1-0 as period one drew to a close.
Just :36 seconds into the second Anthony Menghini scored his eighth goal of the season for the Force, extending Fargo's lead to 2-0. He tallied on a pretty breakaway goal after the Force scooped up a loose puck on the opposite side. Just 29 seconds later, Bret Link scored on the right side of the goal crease banging home a rebound off a one timer from Cole Knuble, for his fourth goal of the year.
Just over a minute later Omaha forward Alex Bump got the Lancers on the board beating Force netminder Anton Castro and bringing the score to 3-1. 7:51 into the middle frame Omaha added another with a shorthanded goal from Griffin Jurecki putting the Lancers down by just one. With just under 8 minutes left in the second period, Force defenseman Leo Gruba sniped a wrister from the left point on the man advantage extending the Force lead to 4-2 to close out the scoring in the second.
The Force made sure to put the game away in the final frame, Bret Link got scoring started in the third with 12:41 left to play. His second goal of the night came off an assist from Mac Swanson, his third of the game, bringing the score to 5-2.
With 4:57 left to play the Lancers added a third goal closing the gap on the Fargo lead, but the Force shut it down thanks to a second goal from Cole Knuble, this time on an empty net. With the win, Fargo improves to 8-3-0-2 on the season. Force goaltender Anton Castro stayed sharp with 16 saves on the night.
The Force are back at it tomorrow where they play the Lancers once again to finish off their three-game slate for the weekend.
