Alumni Update: Ben Dexheimer
November 14, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Today's alumni update focuses on former Capitols defenseman Ben Dexheimer. Dexheimer spent one season with the Caps on the team's way to their first ever Clark Cup Final appearance last season. The Edina, Minnesota, native, currently is lacing them up for the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team.
Ben Dexheimer played his first season of junior hockey during the 2020-21 season. Dexheimer stayed in his home state for his first season of junior hockey playing for the Austin Bruins of the NAHL. He suited up in 46 of the Bruins games that season recording 23 points and a rating of +13. The point total for Dexheimer was good enough for second on the team among defensemen while missing almost a quarter of the regular season games. Following that season, Dexheimer had his sights set on the USHL.
During the 2021 NAHL Entry Draft, the Madison Capitols selected Dexheimer with the 14th overall selection. Once arriving in Madison, Dexheimer found his way into the lineup right away. He was one of six Madison players during the 2021-22 campaign to dress in sixty or more games, which was followed up by the defender playing in all fourteen playoff games. He made the most of his opportunities in the games that he played in becoming the third highest point gatherer on the team in the regular season with 47. In the playoffs, he was tied for third on the team with ten. Dexheimer played a key part of the power play as he was tied for first on the team in assists on the man advantage with 18.
This season, Dexheimer is playing a key role for the University of Wisconsin and their d-core as a freshmen. He has recorded six assists in eleven games played for the Badgers thus far this season. As of late, he's came on even stronger as four of those assists have come in the past three games. That includes a three point weekend against Long Island University last weekend.
The Capitols are at home this weekend as the team faces off against the Green Bay Gamblers on Friday and Saturday night. Friday, it's our third $1 beer night of the season. Then on Saturday, we're celebrating youth hockey in the Madison area with our Youth Hockey Bonanza. Tickets can be found at this link: tickets.madcapshockey.com.
