Flying Squirrels Gobble Bean Suppahs in Extras

Portland, Maine - Sterling Sharp pitched 5.0 innings and struck out four in his Red Sox organizational debut as the Maine Bean Suppahs (53-54, 23-15) dropped an extra-innings game, 8-6 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (52-54, 12-25) on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd of 7,368 at Hadlock Field.

Major League rehabber Rob Refsnyder joined the team, while Kiké Hernandez played his third game in Portland. Refsnyder went 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, and two runs scored. Hernandez finished his night 2-for-4 with a 2 RBI double.

The Flying Squirrels broke onto the scoreboard first, plating two runs in the top of the first against Sharp. Mike Gigliotti led off the inning with a hit by pitch and Tyler Fitzgerald doubled, placing runners at second and third. Tristan Peters grounded out to first, bringing in Gigliotti to give Richmond a 1-0 lead. Diego Rincones lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Fitzgerald, expanding the Flying Squirrels lead to 2-0.

Maine was able to get one run back in the bottom of the first against Richmond starter Jake Dahlberg. Refsnyder and Hernandez led off, with Refsnyder walking and Hernandez hitting a double to put runners at second and third. Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out to third, scoring Refsnyder, cutting into Richmond's lead 2-1.

The Bean Suppahs plated two more runs in the bottom of the second with Dahlberg still on the mound. Wilyer Abreu and Nick Northcut hit back-to-back singled to start the inning. David Hamilton reached on a bunt single, but drew an errant throw from Dahlberg, going down the first base line, scoring Abreu and Northcut to take a 3-2 advantage.

Maine resumed their scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning, adding three runs to their lead. Hamilton led off with a solo homer, increasing the lead to 4-0. Elih Marrero walked and Refsnyder doubled, putting runners at second and third. Hernandez doubled to center, scoring both Marrero and Refsnyder, expanding the lead to 6-2.

Richmond drove in a run in the top of the sixth inning against Maine reliever Brett Kennedy. Diego Rincones doubled to right and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Armani Smith walked, and Carter Aldrete grounded into a double play, scoring Rincones, cutting the Bean Suppah's lead to 6-3.

The Flying Squirrels tied the game in the top of the eighth inning. Fitzgerald reached on a throwing error from Christian Koss and proceeded to steal second base. Tristan Peters walked, chasing Kennedy out of the game. Jacob Wallace replaced him on the mound and Diego Rincones hit a three-run homer to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams went scoreless in the ninth, forcing the game into extra innings.

Neither team was able to bring in a run in the 10th innings, taking the game into the 11th. With Aldrete at second as the extra-innings runner, Ricardo Genoves worked a walk to put runners at first and second. Brandon Martorano pinch ran for Genoves at first. Casey Schmitt doubled to center, scoring Aldrete, taking the lead 7-6. Jacob Heyward hit a sacrifice fly to center in the next at-bat, scoring Martorano and extending the Flying Squirrels lead to 8-6. Cole Waites shut down the Suppahs in the bottom of the 11th, giving Maine a loss, 8-6.

Waites (2-2, 1.80 ERA) picked up the win, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Dylan Spacke (1-5, 6.62 ERA) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

The Sea Dogs and Flying Squirrels play the finale of a six-game series on Sunday with a 1:00 PM first pitch. Portland's start is to be announced and will face Richmond RHP Wil Jensen (1-1, 3.92 ERA).
