SEA DOGS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT - The Portland Sea Dogs won their fourth straight game last night over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-2 at Hadlock Field. Kai-Wei Teng allowed the first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Wilyer Abreu collected the first hit of the night for the Sea Dogs, a double to left field. One out later, Izzy Wilson reached on a throwing error, advancing Abreu to third. Nick Northcut doubled off the Maine Monster in left, scoring Wilson and Abreu, giving the Sea Dogs a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ceddanne Rafaela reached on a bunt single and Stephen Scott grounded a base hit into center, putting runners on the corners. In the next at-bat, Scott stole second and drew a throw from Richmond catcher Brandon Martorano, allowing Rafaela to score from third, making it a 4-0 game. Alex Binelas and Wilson worked back-to-back walks and Northcut reached on a fielding error scoring Scott. Tyler Dearden hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Binelas, increasing the Sea Dogs lead to 5-0. In the seventh, Jacob Heyward led off with a walk and Casey Schmitt singled. One out later, Franklin Labour walked to load the bases. A wild pitch by major league rehabber Tyler Danish brought in Heyward, making it a 5-1 lead for the Sea Dogs. Richmond was able to muster one more run in the top of the ninth. Casey Schmitt led off with a triple and Riley Mahan brought him home with a groundout to first. Brendan Nail struck out the final two batters, securing a 5-2 win for the Sea Dogs.
PITCHERS DUEL - Sea Dogs starter Bryan Mata and Flying Squirrels starter Kai-Wei Teng started last night's game in a pitcher's duel. Teng struck out 10 Sea Dogs in his 5.0 innings of work, including striking out eight of the first nine batters that he faced. Mata fired 6.0 shutout innings allowing the first hit of the game for Richmond in the fourth inning with one out.
STILL TOP DOGS - The Sea Dogs continue to sit atop the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. With the victory yesterday, Portland now has a 1.5 game lead over the second place Somerset Patriots and lead the third place Hartford Yard Goats by 3.5 games. In the Southwest Division, the Bowie Baysox are in first place, 1.0 game ahead of the Erie SeaWolves.
MAINE BEAN SUPPAHS - Bean suppers or suppahs for Mainers is a centuries-old New England tradition. Typically served on Saturday nights, bean suppahs have been a source for feeding and gathering communities at churches and grange halls throughout the state. A Maine bean suppah commonly includes baked beans served with franks...red snappers for Mainers, and brown bread.
IZZY WILSON GETS ON BASE - Izzy Wilson is currently riding an eight game on base streak for the Sea Dogs. During that time, he is hitting .292 and has an on-base percentage of .414. He is 7-for-24 with four runs, two homers, four RBI, five walks and five strikeouts.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - August 13, 2008 - Kris Johnson (8-7), T. J. Large and Daniel Bard combined for 16 strikeouts and Portland beat Altoona 5-3. Johnson worked 5.2 IP on seven hits, two runs (one earned) and eight strikeouts. Bard fanned all four batters faced to earn his 4th save and hit 100 mph on the Hadlock Field radar gun in the ninth inning.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Sterling Sharp is set to make his first appearance in the Boston Red Sox organization. Previously, he was in the Washington Nationals system until August 5th when he was released. This season, he went 2-5 with 6.62 ERA in 18 appearances with the Rochester Red Wings. With the Red Wings he tossed 66.2 innings allowing 53 runs (49 earned) on 86 hits while walking 30 and striking out 59. He last pitched August 4th against the Columbus Clippers and tossed 3.0 innings allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out three.
