Erie SeaWolves News Release
On a night where the SeaWolves offense struggled to produce runs, the pitching staff came up huge as Erie took down New Hampshire 2-1 on Saturday night. The win was Erie's sixth straight and improved the team to 9-2 on the current 12-game trip.
Erie took the lead in the top of the second against Fisher Cats starter Luis Quinones. Quincy Nieporte extended his hitting streak to seven straight games with a leadoff double. He advanced to third on a Wenceel Perez flyout and scored on a two-out Bryant Packard single to right for a 1-0 lead. It was the first Double-A hit and RBI for Packard who was playing in his second game since being called up from West Michigan.
The SeaWolves added to the lead in the third. Andrew Navigato doubled with one out and scored on a two-out Perez infield single for a two-run advantage.
The lone New Hampshire run came in the home half of the third against Erie starter Ty Madden. Sebastian Espino doubled with one out and scored on a Davis Schneider single. Schneider advanced to second on a Parker Meadows error in center on the run-scoring hit. John Aiello followed the Schneider base hit with a single to left. Schneider attempted to score from second but was cut down at the plate by Packard, keeping Erie ahead. Madden got out of the inning with no additional damage.
The Cats threatened with two outs in the fifth against Madden. Schneider walked with two outs and moved to third on an Aiello single. Madden struck out Orelvis Martinez, ending the New Hampshire threat.
Madden returned to work in the sixth. He struck out Tyler Keenan but gave up a base hit to Luis De Los Santos was he was lifted for Billy Lescher. Lescher got the final two outs of the frame in what would be one of the best nights of the season for the Erie bullpen.
Dario Gardea, Gerson Moreno and Brendan White followed Lescher and the four combined to hold the Fisher Cats without a hit over the final 3.2 innings of the game as they retired the final 11 batters following the De Los Santos hit in the sixth. White earned his seventh save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Madden (1-0) earned his first Double-A win in his second Erie start. The righty allowed a run on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Quinones (0-4) took the loss allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings.
