Flying Chanclas Come Back To Beat Amarillo In Seesaw Game

May 25, 2023 - Texas League (TL) - San Antonio Missions News Release

SAN ANTONIO - The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio continued their six-game series with the Pointy Boots de Amarillo on Thursday night. In a back-and-forth battle that saw both teams ahead at different times, Tirso Ornelas hit what ended up being the game-winning two-run double for the Flying Chanclas in the seventh inning. San Antonio held on to win 5-4, clinching a third straight victory against Amarillo.

Daniel Camarena took the mound for the Flying Chanclas and set down Amarillo in order to start the game. This allowed San Antonio to grab their bats quickly, and they wasted no time attacking Pointy Boots starter Luke Albright in the first inning. After consecutive hits by Ripken Reyes and Ornelas, Pedro Castellanos drove in Reyes with an opposite-field single to put the Flying Chanclas up 1-0.

In the third inning, Camarena got into some trouble. Amarillo loaded the bases with three straight singles and tied the game when Jordan Lawler was hit by a pitch. The Pointy Boots then took a 2-1 lead on a fielder's choice, but that proved to be the extent of the damage.

Amarillo pushed Camarena out of the game when they filled the corners with no one out in the top of the fourth inning. Seth Mayberry replaced him and allowed an inherited runner to score on a fielder's choice, making it 3-1 in favor of the Pointy Boots.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jorge Oña smashed a double to the center field fence that brought home Ray-Patrick Didder and cut the Amarillo advantage to 3-2. Chandler Seagle moved Oña over with a sacrifice bunt before Reyes tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Flying Chanclas threatened once again in the sixth when Castellanos walked and Juan Fernandez singled to begin the frame. However, Albright escaped and kept the game tied.

The Pointy Boots placed the first two runners on in the seventh, and Seth Beer cashed in with a go-ahead single to give Amarillo a 4-3 lead. This remained the score as Wolff Stadium got up to stretch.

Michel Otanez entered to pitch in the seventh inning for Amarillo, and the Flying Chanclas greeted him rudely. Oña reached with a single and Reyes took a hit-by-pitch to give San Antonio another chance to even the score. Ornelas took things a step further. He split the left-center field gap with a two-run double, catapulting the Flying Chanclas ahead 5-4.

With the lead in hand, Alek Jacob entered from the San Antonio bullpen. He threw a clean eighth inning and allowed a single in the ninth, but Seagle gunned Lawler down trying to steal. Jacob then fanned Caleb Roberts to seal the 5-4 win for the Flying Chanclas.
