
Flint Scores Quick Overtime Goal in Guelph Friday for Second Straight Victory

Guelph, Ont. - Flint's Kole Sherwood and Ryan Moore each tallied a four-point night en-route to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Guelph Storm before more than 4,100 fans at the Sleeman Centre Friday night. Flint improved to 23-21-1-3 on the season while Guelph fell to 17-27-3-2 this campaign.
Ryan Moore opened the scoring for the Firebirds 3:33 into the first frame after he fired a wrist-shot from the left-circle that beat Guelph's Liam Herbst blocker-side for his 27th goal of the season. Kole Sherwood (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Alex Peters picked up assists on the play. Sherwood's assist extending his point-streak to 11-consecutive games. Flint led 1-0 after the first period and led in shots 10-7.
The Firebirds doubled their lead when Moore scored his 28th goal of the season and second of the night 3:02 into the second period. Moore cleaned-up a rebound in-front of the net on his backhand to make the score 2-0 for his ninth goal in the past ten games.
Sherwood extended Flint's lead to three when he skated up the right-wing wall and deked to his backhand before firing a shot that beat Liam Herbst top-shelf. Moore and Jalen Smereck (Arizona Coyotes) were credited assists.
The Storm cut the deficit to two goals when Isaac Ratcliffe scored on the power-play mid-way through the second period after he fired a wrist-shot from the left-circle, beating Garrett Forrest glove-side to make the score 3-1 after two periods of play.
Albert Michnac made it 3-2 when he scored his 13th goal of the season on the power-play at the 11:56 mark of the third period after he tapped-in a pass from Ratcliffe in-front of the net that found a hole past Forrest.
Guelph evened the score 53 seconds later after Luke Burghardt one-timed a cross-crease pass from Liam Hawel at the left-circle to make the score 3-3.
The two teams remained tied after 60 minutes of play, needing extra time to determine a winner.
Sherwood ended the game when he scored his 25th goal of the season 35 seconds into overtime after he buried his own rebound from the right-circle, over the right-shoulder of Herbst for a 4-3 Firebirds' victory. Sherwood's two-goal night gives him 11 lamp-lighters in the last seven games.
Flint outshot Guelph 38-29. The Storm were two-for-five on the power-play, while the Firebirds were scoreless on two opportunities. Sherwood earned first star honors after he scored two goals and collected two assists. Moore collected the third star after he picked-up four points as well. Forrest picked up the victory, making 26 saves on 29 Guelph shots.

The Flint Firebirds return home to the Dort Federal Event Center tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 4, to host the Kitchener Rangers. Fans will be treated to a special guest appearance from Joe Kocur, a former enforcer with the Detroit Red Wings and a four-time Stanley Cup Champion. Kocur will be in attendance for an autograph session on the arena concourse from 6-7:30 p.m. The autograph session is available to all fans with a suggested $5 donation to the Firebirds Charitable Foundation. 1,500 special Joe Kocur autograph cards will be handed out at the door starting at 6:00 PM courtesy of Commercial Graphics.
Single game tickets for the Flint Firebirds 2016-17 season are $12 for Bronze, $15 for Silver, $19 for Gold and $25 for VIP seating. All seats are reserved / assigned seating.
