Last Week's Games

Wednesday, January 14th - Quad City Flames 0 at Lake Erie Monsters 3

The Flames kicked off the season's longest road trip on Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters. Netminder Tyler Weiman stopped 32 Flames shots to earn his second consecutive shutout in the Monsters win. The contest marked just the second time this season that the Flames have been shutout. The Flames trailed 1-0 after one period despite outshooting the Monsters 12-4. Lake Erie's Nathan Smith netted his fifth goal of the year at 2:36 of the first frame when he re-directed a centering feed from Chris Mueller off a Flame and into the Quad City net. The rest of the period belonged to Monsters netminder Tyler Weiman, who made 12 saves in the opening frame including a magnificent stop on Carsen Germyn just before the mid-way point of the period. Smith netted his second goal of the night early in the second period when he scored on the power play. After his centering pass lay unclaimed in the Flames crease, Smith skated to the blue paint and jammed home his own pass for his sixth goal of the season. Nigel Williams extended the Lake Erie lead to 3-0 at 9:49 of the second period when he sent a blast into the Quad City net from the left wing wall following a drop pass by Justin Bowers. The Monsters held the 3-0 edge through the end of the contest.

Friday, January 16th - Quad City Flames 2 at Iowa Chops 3

The Quad City Flames continued their longest road trip of 2008-09 on Friday night with a 3-2 loss in Des Moines vs. the Iowa Chops. Eric Boguniecki scored in the final minute to win the game for the Chops despite a two-goal effort from Quad City's Kyle Greentree. The Flames outshot Iowa 11-6 in a scoreless first period. Chops netminder David LeNeveu turned aside every shot he faced while also denying two Flames power plays. In the Flames net, Leland Irving made a half dozen saves while also facing a pair of power plays. Kyle Greentree started the scoring when he netted a 4-on-4 goal with 4:57 left in the middle frame. Kris Chucko and Anders Eriksson assisted on the goal, Greentree's 18th of the year. Chucko's backhand chance was turned aside by LeNeveu, but Greentree converted on the rebound to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. The Chops answered three and a half minutes later when Brian Salcido scored on a shot from the high slot during a 4-on-3 Iowa power play. The tally was Salcido's fifth of the season and sent the teams to the dressing room with the score tied at one after 40 minutes. The teams exchanged goals early in third period. T.J. Trevelyan netted his 11th goal of the season after working a give-and-go off the end wall with Petteri Wirtanen. The Flames responded two minutes later when Kyle Greentree scored on the power play following a cross-crease feed from Jamie Lundmark. The game remained tie until the final minute of the third when the Chops broke through for the game-winning tally. Eric Bogunieck accepted a feed from Wirtanen and streaked into Flames territory. He unleashed a shot from the right wing circle for his eighth goal of the year and the game-winning tally.

Saturday, January 17th - Quad City Flames 3 at Chicago Wolves 4 Overtime

The longest Flames road trip of the season continued on Saturday in Chicago with a 4-3 overtime loss to the defending Calder Cup Champion Chicago Wolves. Brett Sterling netted the game-winning goal for Chicago on a power play just one minute into the extra session. Brett Palin, Adam Cracknell and Kyle Greentree scored for the Flames in the overtime loss. Carsen Germyn assisted on Greentree's tally to move into a tie for first on the franchise's All-Time Scoring List with 73 points (21 goals and 52 assists) during his time as a Flame. The Flames finished a wild first period with a 2-1 lead. Brett Palin put the Flames on the board when he scored on a shot through traffic with just 19 seconds gone in the opening frame. Palin's tally, his third of the season, was assisted by Jamie Lundmark and Kyle Greentree. It took only 35 seconds for the Wolves to respond as Jeff Hamilton was awarded a penalty shot after being pulled down on a semi-breakaway. Hamilton converted on the penalty shot chance and knotted the score at one aside with 54 seconds gone in the game. The Flames recaptured the lead at the 11:19 mark of the opening period when Adam Cracknell scored on a shot from a tough angle along the Chicago goal line. Chicago netminder Robert Gherson allowed the puck to sneak in along the right wing post. Gherson turned and flipped the puck out of the net before referee Andy Thiessen could spot the goal. However, the goal light went on, and Thiessen stopped play. After a brief consultation with the goal judge, Thiessen awarded the goal and the Flames carried their lead through the remainder of the period. The Wolves captured the lead for the first time on the strength of two early second period power-play goals. Jeff Hamilton netted his second goal of the game on a blast from the left wing circle during a Chicago man advantage at 1:08 of the period. Brian Sipotz added a power-play goal just three and a half minutes later on a shot from the high slot. Sipotz' tally gave the Wolves their first lead at 3-2 and chased Matt Keetley from the Quad City crease after 24 minutes and 27 seconds of action. The Flames righted their ship after the Sipotz goal and skated scoreless with the Wolves for the next 14 minutes. Quad City went on a power play at 18:11 of the middle frame when Chicago's Jordan LaVallee was whistled off for hooking. The Flames converted just 19 seconds into the man advantage when Kyle Greentree netted his 20th goal of the year when he sent a shot off and Wolf and into the Chicago net to tie the game at three. Carsen Germyn earned the secondary assist on the Greentree goal to move into a tie for first on the Flames Career Scoring List with 73 points (21 goals and 52 assists). The game remained knotted as the final 90 seconds of the middle frame ticked away. The teams skated scoreless through the closing twenty minutes. Late in the third period, Quad City encountered penalty trouble. Kyle Greentree was sent off with two minutes left in regulation. During the Chicago power play, both Anders Eriksson (delay of game) and Brett Palin (tripping) were given minors. The Flames were able to hold the fort late in regulation to earn a point. In the overtime, the Flames continued their excellent penalty killing until the levee finally broke with just one second left on Palin's penalty. Brett Sterling scored on the power play following the rebound of a Jeff Hamilton shot. The tally won the game for Chicago and marked the second time in the last two games vs. the Flames at Allstate Arena that Sterling netted an overtime game-winner.

Sunday, January 18th - Quad City Flames 5 at Milwaukee Admirals 2

The Flames earned a win over the West Division-leading Milwaukee Admirals on Sunday by a final of 5-2. David Van der Gulik scored twice in the win and moved into sole possession of first on the Flames All-Time Goal Scoring List. Carsen Germyn also made history as he moved into first on the team's All-Time Points List. Germyn added a power-play goal as well. Brett Palin contributed an even strength marker, and Brett Sutter scored an empty net goal as Quad City earned their 16th victory of the year. The Flames grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of first period goals by David Van der Gulik. The first tally came on the power play as Van der Gulik swatted home a rebound following a shot by Brett Sutter. Carsen Germyn earned the secondary assist to move into first on the Flames All-Time Point Scoring List. It was Germyn's 74th point (21 goals and 53 assists) as a Flame, one better than Grant Stevenson. With the tally, Van der Gulik moved into a tie for first on the Flames All-Time Goal Scoring List. He moved into sole possession of first on the list just nine minutes later when he scored at even strength. It was the 31st goal of Van der Gulik's Quad City career as he surpassed Grant Stevenson and Krys Kolanos, who both recorded 30 goals as Flames in 2007-08. Brett Sutter earned the lone helper on the second tally. The Flames closed the historic first period with a 2-0 lead. The Flames extended their lead to 3-0 on a power-play goal by Germyn just 65 seconds into the middle period. The tally was scored on a point shot by the Flames forward. The Admirals knotched their first goal of the night at 4:33 of the second frame when Alexander Sulzer scored on a blast from the left wing circle. Quad City re-established their three goal lead at 12:49 of the second when Brett Palin scored on a shot from the slot to put the Flames in front 4-1. The Flames held on to that lead for the remainder of the second period. After skating scoreless through the first 17:29 of the third period, the Admirals pulled to within two goals on a tally by Nolan Yonkman. With time dwindling Milwaukee pulled their goaltender in favor of the sixth attacker. Brett Sutter scored into the empty net to secure the victory for the Flames by a final of 5-2.
