The Sea Dogs clawed back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Rumble Ponies 7-4 on Friday. The Rumble Ponies were first to score after Brett Baty put the Rumble Ponies on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out solo homer to left field and Binghamton led, 1-0. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Wyatt Young worked a lead-off walk then moved to third on a single by Zach Ashford. A sacrifice fly by Matt Winaker brought home Young and extended Binghamton's lead, 2-0. Brandon McIlwain then blasted a two-run homer to left field and the Rumble Ponies led, 4-0. The Sea Dogs staged their comeback in the top of the eighth inning. David Hamilton led off the inning with a single to right field then Izzy Wilson worked a walk. Kole Cottam smashed a three-run home run to left field and Portland was on the board, 4-3. Ceddanne Rafaela then singled to right and Christian Koss blasted his ninth home run of the year to left field, and the Sea Dogs led, 5-4. Portland added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a Hamilton double and an Izzy Wilson triple, leading them to their 7-4 win.
ON TO THE NEXT STREAK - Stephen Scott could not reach base on Friday night, ending his eight-game on-base streak. The streak went from June 28 to July 7, during which Scott posted a .355 average (11-for-31) with one home run, five RBI, seven walks, six strikeouts, and nine runs scored. With one streak ending, another has appeared. David Hamilton has brought his hit-streak to five games now, going back to July 7. The lefty-swinging second basemen is 6-for-19 (.316), with two home runs, eight runs scored, two RBI, four walks, three strikeouts, and has added two stolen bases once reaching.
COTTAM HAS A NIGHT - Kole Cottam started last night's game at first base. This is just the 11th time in Cottam's career he has played at first base. He made two appearances at first for Portland in 2021 and Friday was his first during the 2022 season. On top of being in a somewhat new position, Cottam also took a big role in the Sea Dogs comeback, blasting a three-run homer in the top of the eighth, leading to a five-run inning and a 7-4 win.
PITCHERS LOVE JULY - During the five-game streak the Sea Dogs have put together, the pitching has backed up the amazing offense performance. Portland pitchers have only allowed 15 runs over the last five games, which means after the last 45.0 innings, they have posted a 3.00 ERA. During this hot streak, Portland is outscoring opponents 50-15.
PITCHING MATCHUP - Bryan Mata enters tonight's game as the seventh-ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization according to MLB Pipeline. Tonight will be his third outing in a Sea Dogs uniform. He made one relief appearance on June 28, working through 3.1 innings while allowing one run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He then made his first start on July 3, holding the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to one unearned run, striking out five and walking one. Overall, he has allowed just one earned run over 7.1 innings, coming out to a 1.23 ERA.
