Five Shutout Innings from Blalock Lifts Shuckers to Shutout Win
April 6, 2024 - Southern League (SL)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - Bradley Blalock twirled five shutout innings with four strikeouts and Freddy Zamora's solo shot to left proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win for the Biloxi Shuckers (2-0) over the Montgomery Biscuits (0-2) at Shuckers Ballpark on Saturday night. The win clinched the third straight opening series win for Biloxi.
Blalock, in his Double-A debut, retired his first seven batters before working around two walks in the third. In the fourth, despite giving up the first hit of the game, two fielder's choices to third kept the Biscuits from reaching second and kept the game scoreless.
Meanwhile, Patrick Wicklander for Montgomery retired each of the first 14 batters faced, but Freddy Zamora turned on a fastball and lined a solo shot to left for his first hit of the year, a homer to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead.
The hit was all Biloxi needed the rest of the way. Russell Smith stranded the tying run on third in the sixth with two strikeouts before a scoreless seventh. In the eighth, Justin King notched his first Double-A strikeout and held the Biscuits scoreless.
In the ninth, Justin Yeager made his first regular-season appearance since May 11, 2023, and tossed a perfect inning on eight pitches to earn the save.
Blalock (1-0) earned the save while Yeager (1) picked up his first save of the season. Wicklander (0-1), took the loss despite nine strikeouts over five innings.
The Shuckers will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Shuckers Ballpark against the Biscuits. Tyler Woessner is set to make his Double-A debut for Biloxi after leading the Midwest League in strikeouts during the 2023 campaign. Former big league left-handed arm Brandon McKay is set to make his first appearance since 2022 for the Biscuits. Smokey Bear from the Mississippi Forestry Commission will throw out the first pitch and be available for meet-and-greet opportunities throughout the game. The first 125 fans will receive a special Shuckers poster presented by Mele Printing and pregame autographs will be available.
