Iowa Cubs News Release
NASHVILLE, TN - The Iowa Cubs (3-1) earned a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds (1-3) Sunday at First Tennessee Park to secure their first series win of the season.
Nashville scored first for the third time in four games with a pair of run in its first at-bats. Zack Granite punched a leadoff single to get the action started and was later brought in on a ground out. Chase d'Arnaud then doubled the Sounds' lead with his second home run of the series.
Richelson Pena set down Iowa in order through the first two frames until a Zack Short single opened the third and gave the I-Cubs some momentum. An error put two runners on and a Donnie Dewees groundout pushed in the I-Cubs' first run of the game.
Dixon Machado singled in another run and found himself on third base as Ian Happ and Phillip Evans drew consecutive walks to load the bags. A Zach Borenstein groundout pushed Iowa to a 3-2 lead and Trent Giambrone added to the edge with a two-RBI double.
An Andy Ibanez RBI double shrunk the gap in the fourth, but the Sound offense couldn't recover.
After the sixth, the game was stalled due to rain and later resumed after a one hour and 56 minute delay. The two teams combined for six hits following the delay, but left all the baserunners stranded.
Iowa native Colin Rea made his first start as an I-Cub and allowed three earned runs on five hits through 4.2 innings, walked two and fanned two. Ryan Williams (1-0) made his season debut and contributed 1.1 shutout frames out of the bullpen on his way to the victory. Dillon Maples and James Norwood added to the I-Cubs' scoreless relief effort. Norwood collected his first save of the season.
