Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE - The Iowa Cubs outlasted the Nashville Sounds through a lengthy rain delay and came away with a 5-3 win in front of 8,572 fans at First Tennessee Park Sunday afternoon.
It was a 5-3 game in favor of Iowa when rain halted play after six innings. A one-hour, 56-minute delay followed. When play resumed Iowa relievers held Nashville off the scoreboard to secure the series win ahead of Monday's finale.
Nashville jumped on the board early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning after Richelson Pena's 1-2-3 top half. Zack Granite singled to start the rally, swiped second base and eventually scored on Danny Santana's RBI groundout.
The scoring continued when Chase d'Arnaud blasted a solo homer to left-center field off Iowa starter Colin Rea. d'Arnaud's team-leading second long ball of the season gave the Sounds a 2-0 lead.
Pena cruised through the first two innings by facing the minimum, but trouble hit in the third. A day after sending 13 to the plate in the third, Iowa sent 11 to the dish and scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead. Trent Giambrone delivered the big hit with a two-run double off Pena.
The combination of d'Arnaud and Andy Ibanez trimmed the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth. d'Arnaud started the inning with a walk and Ibanez followed with a scorching run-scoring double down the left field line.
d'Arnaud went 2-for-3 with 2 runs, an RBI and a walk while Ibanez went 3-for-4 with an RBI in his 2019 debut.
Nashville's bullpen trio of Brett Martin, Miguel Del Pozo and Nick Gardewine combined to toss four scoreless innings following Pena's start.
The series finale between the Sounds and Cubs is scheduled for Monday night. Right-hander Phillips Valdez starts for Nashville against right-hander Trevor Clifton for Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Eli White extended his hitting streak to four games when he doubled in the fourth inning. White has hit safely in every game this season and is hitting .385 (5-for-13) on the season.
Chase d'Arnaud clubbed his team-leading second home run of the season. It was a solo blast off Colin Rea in the first inning.
With Iowa's five runs in the third inning, the Sounds have now been outscored 14-1 in the third inning.
