Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD - An abbreviated outing by Pelican starter Edgar Osuna would prove to be a sign of things to come as the Pelicans dropped the opener of a three-game set with the Frederick Keys 7-2 Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Osuna only allowed one run over just three innings but the Keys were able to get it done against the Pelicans' bullpen, including a five-run sixth inning.
The Keys struck first with a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Caleb Joseph opened the inning with a leadoff double and scored a batter later when Matt Tucker singled him home. The first three batters in the inning all reached but Osuna pitched out of the jam allowing just the one run. It would be the only run he allowed on the night as he struck out the side in the third, his final inning of work.
Myrtle Beach evened the game with a run in the top of the third when Chris Shehan scored from second on an RBI single by Randy Gress. That would be as close as the Pelicans would get all night as it was all Keys after that.
Frederick went up for good in the fourth frame off Jaye Chapman. Bobby Stevens singled home Tucker to put the Keys up 2-1 before they really opened the game up in the sixth.
Wally Crancer opened the sixth with a triple off reliever Moises Hernandez and scored on a sacrifice fly a batter later. The big blow came with two men on and one out, when Tyler Henson hit a three-run home run off Patrick Currin.
Gerry Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the seventh to cap the Pelicans scoring. Rick Zagone (1-3) got credit for the win. He worked seven innings allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out 10. Jay Chapman (1-1) was saddled with the loss after he allowed just one unearned run over two innings. Six Pelican pitchers combined to strikeout 12 Keys in the losing effort.
The series continues Saturday night when the Pelicans send right-hander Jacob Thompson to the mound against Frederick righty Kenny Moreland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 at Harry Grove Stadium.
