ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 13, 2003) – Atlantic City put together a five-run fifth inning and Andy Zwirchitz held Camden hitters in check as the Surf downed the first-place Riversharks, 5-2, Friday evening at the Sandcastle.

Atlantic City's big inning came in the fifth, as Raul Marval roped a clutch single with the bases loaded that scored Trey Beamon and Enohel Polanco to tie the contest at 2-2.

After Juan Thomas walked to load the bases again, Emison Soto hit into what would have been a double play, but Camden second baseman Nate Vopata threw the ball away and two runs crossed the plate. An RBI single by Atlantic City's Pat Burns capped off the five-run inning and gave the Surf a 5-2 lead.

The Riversharks scored one run in the first inning and one in the third, but did not have a hit after the second inning off Zwirchitz (4-1), who allowed just four hits through eight innings pitched. He allowed two runs while striking out six and walking three to win his fourth straight decision of the season.

Surf closer Randi Mallard tossed a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 11th save of the season. Atlantic City tallied all its runs off Camden starter Kevin Dougherty (6-2), who pitched 4.2 innings, walking three and striking out one to pick up just his second loss of the season.

The "Atlantic City Expressway Series", sponsored by the South Jersey Transportation Authority, is now tied at two games apiece.

The Surf improve to 19-20 while the Riversharks drop to 25-15 on the season.

ON DECK: The Surf and the Riversharks will play the second game of three on Saturday, June 14, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. It will be "Jimmy Buffet Night" at the Sandcastle, complete with a pre-game Buffet cover band and a jersey auction following the game. To cap off the evening, the Surf will give away two tickets to Buffet's sold out July 1 concert in Camden. "Jimmy Buffet Night" at the Sandcastle is sponsored by Damon's Restaurant in Egg Harbor Township.
