Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, June 13-The Newark Bears today announced that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Jaime Navarro and infielder Eddie Lara and has released left-handed pitcher Juan Rodriguez.

Navarro, who has won 116 Major League games over twelve seasons, returns to the Bears, for whom he pitched in 2001. That season Navarro posted an 11-9 record, 4.09 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 176 innings pitched. In 2001 he led the Atlantic League in innings pitched, ranked 4th in wins and 5th in strikeouts.

The 35 year-old Navarro, who has pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, was 17-11 with a 3.33 with the Brewers in 1992. He won fifteen games twice in his career, with the Brewers in 1991 and in 1996 with the Cubs. He began this season in the Cincinnati Reds organization, where he was pitching for triple-A Louisville.

"I am very excited that Jaime is back with the Newark Bears," said Newark general manager Chris Bryan. "He is a proven Major League arm and he was a fan favorite during his first tour of duty here in Newark."

Lara, 27, began the 2003 with the Atlantic City Surf before being released. He spent seven seasons in the Oakland A's organization and has spent the past three years playing in independent baseball. Lara, who hit a career-high 12 home runs while playing for both Jackson and San Angelo in the Central League in 2002, is a lifetime .295 hitter.
