Berkshire Black Bears News Release

Yes, there was baseball in Pittsfield on Friday the Thirteenth. The rain, which plagued the downtown area all day long, held off for the first meeting of the Black Bears and Spirit. For the game, it took bonus baseball to decide a winner as Berkshire scored a run in the tenth to beat North Shore 3-2.

Strong pitching from starters Rick Guttormson and Bryan Morse (Berkshire and North Shore respectively) kept the scores low at Wahconah Park; going into the ninth inning the score was deadlocked at two. Both teams threatened to add to the tally in the ninth, and yet both left runners in scoring position. After Shane Waroff pitched a one-two-three tenth for the Black Bears, the hometown boys were poised to win their third straight. Ryan Jones led off the inning with a pop up behind the mound. Three Spirit infielders converged on the ball and the oddities of Friday the 13th hit with full force. Second baseman Marcos Agramonte who will rue the day, committed four errors in the game, saw the ball glance off his glove and the hustling Jones slide into second base. The next batter, centerfielder Shane Hopper, was determined to get both teams out of the increasing rainfall. Hopper hit an 0-1 pitch to deep right-center, his second double of the game, and sent the hardy fans at Wahconah home happy.

Waroff (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, while reliever Chad Bircher (1-2) took the loss.

The teams will play Saturday night at 7:05 pm and Sunday at 2:05pm.
