Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A five-goal first period was enough to propel the Binghamton Senators to a 6-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday afternoon. The loss put an end to the Penguins four game winning streak, and allowed the Sens to move back into first place in the East Division.

The Sens jumped out a quick 3-0 lead off of goals by Matt Puempel, David Dziurzynski and Wacey Hamilton in the first eight minutes of play.

Spencer Machacek got the Pens on the board with a power play marker at 9:45 of the first, his 18th goal of the season and 10th in 18 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Garrett Thompson, signed to an amateur tryout contract out of Ferris State earlier in the week, potted his first professional goal at 14:04, and Cole Schneider extended the lead to 5-1 with a power play goal at 17:12 to finish off the first period scoring.

Puempel netted his second goal of the game and his 28th of the season five minutes into the second, before Machacek countered with his second of the night as three and a half minutes later.

Eric Hartzell, appearing in his first game with the Penguins since February 25, stopped 21 shots in the loss.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (40-23-3-5, 88 points) currently sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race, while the Senators (41-23-1-5, 88 points) hold down the three spot in the conference standings.

The Penguins are back in action this Friday night when they travel to face the Syracuse Crunch. The Pens finish up their 2013-14 home schedule with games next Saturday against the Senators, and next Sunday when the Toronto Marlies come to town.

Good seats for the final two Penguins regular season home games are available at the arena box office, online at TicketMaster.com or by calling 570-208-7367.
