
Bruins Defeat Pirates 7-2

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in Providence in their final meeting of the year. Lucas Lessio and Brandon Yip both scored for the Pirates in the loss.
The Bruins opened the first period with three straight goals. Justin Florek got the first Bruins' tally at 2:10 of the first to give Providence a 1-0 lead. 2:12 after Florek's goal, Ryan Spooner doubled the Bruins' lead, beating Chris Rawlings on the glove side. Matt Fraser then tipped Craig Cunningham's shot past Rawlings with 10:11 left in the first and Providence led 3-0. Rawlings settled down after Fraser's goal, stopping his next 9 shots, including a penalty shot attempt by Alexander Khokhlachev to keep the deficit at 3. The Bruins outshot the Pirates 16-9 in the first.
Lucas Lessio started the scoring for the Pirates in the second. Lessio's shot beat Niklas Svedberg just 1:22 into the second period for his 27th goal of the year to get Portland on the board. Joel Hanley and Kevin Raine picked up assists, with Raine's assist his first professional point. Lessio's goal tied him with Tobias Rieder and Andy Miele for the team lead in goals and was the 6th straight goal for Lessio scored in the second period. Brandon Yip then brought the Pirates closer with his 12th goal of the year on the power play with just 6:32 left in the second, making the score 3-2. Rieder and Greg Carey picked up assists on Yip's goal. The Bruins responded with a goal of their own, as Joe Morrow picked up the tally with just 3.2 seconds left in the second to give Providence a 2 goal advantage again.
Providence would pull away in the third. Justin Florek got his second goal of the game at 8:41 of the third to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead. Seth Griffith then scored on the breakaway goal at 11:46 of the third to make it 6-2 Bruins, and Jared Knight added a final goal with 5:21 left in regulation to cap the scoring. Andy Miele and Jordan Martinook each saw point streaks come to an end in the defeat.
The Pirates return to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday to face the Manchester Monarchs in a game that was originally scheduled for April 20th. Puck drop is 7 PM for the 11th game of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Tires & Service. Tickets for the April 20th game will be honored on Wednesday.
