New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
ALTOONA, Pa. - Andy Burns and Ryan Schimpf provided the early run support and P.J. Walters dazzled over seven innings as the Fisher Cats won their second straight shutout with a 4-0 win over the Altoona Curve. The victory clinched the Fisher Cats first road series win since April, and it leaves them in line for the sweep on Sunday afternoon.
Burns opened the scoring in the second inning. After picking up two hits on Friday night, he lined a home run in to the left field bleachers for a 1-0 lead. It was his fourth of the season and his second in the last of the week.
A pair of two-out runs added to the lead in the third. With Melky Mesa at second, Jon Berti hit a ground ball to shortstop. Alen Hanson's throw to first was in the dirt and got away from first baseman Stetson Allie. Mesa scored on the play and Berti advanced to second. Berti then scored when Schimpf double to right to make it a 3-0 game.
In the fifth, Schimpf was at it again with two outs. Following Mesa's double, Schimpf singled to left to push the advantage to 4-0.
Four runs was more than enough for the Fisher Cats debut of P.J. Walters. Acquired in a trade with Kansas City on Monday, the veteran turned in his best outing this season. He tossed seven scoreless, allowing just one hit - a check-swing double in the fifth. He finished with ten strikeouts, the most by a Fisher Cats pitcher this season, and walked three for the victory.
Schimpf and Burns each went 2-4 to spark the offense. Schimpf had two RBI and finished May with 12 extra-base hits and a team-high 16 RBI. Burns finished the month with a pair of homers and drove in 14.
The Fisher Cats now go for the sweep and their fourth win on this six-game road trip on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1, 3.94) is scheduled to start against Altoona righty A.J. Morris (5-1, 1.65). Radio coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com .
The Fisher Cats return home to begin a six-game stand against Bowie and Erie on Tuesday, June 3 at 7:05 p.m. The homestand will feature two fireworks shows, an educational day morning game, and two giveaways. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, at the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
