Norwich, CT- Fabio Castro worked five shutout innings, allowing one hit, and striking out ten, but Mother Nature came out on top as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Connecticut Defenders opened a series Monday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

Heavy rains forced the game to be stopped after five innings with the score tied 0-0. It will be finished when the Fisher Cats return to Connecticut on Saturday, May 16, prior to a regularly scheduled game.

Castro extended his scoreless streak to open the season to 16.2 innings. He recorded ten strikeouts on the cold, rainy night, including a franchise-record eight consecutive between the second and fourth innings.

Defenders starter Brooks McNiven worked five scoreless innings for the second time in a week against the Fisher Cats, allowing three hits, two by 2B Brad Emaus.

The Fisher Cats are scheduled to play again in Norwich on Tuesday night at 6:35pm. LHP Luis Perez (1-1, 1.50) starts for New Hampshire against Connecticut RHP Nick Pereira (0-0, 2.57) The BayRing Communications Pre-Game Show begins at 6:15pm with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

The Fisher Cats open a four-game series against the Binghamton Mets on Thursday, April 23, with a 6:35pm game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The first 2,000 kids in attendance will receive a free Coca-Cola Fisher Cats Pennant. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
