AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Fish Rally Late, But Lose in Extras

August 15, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Friday night at Shaw Park, the Winnipeg Goldeyes trailed the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 6-0 before they managed to put a run on the board. But to their credit, the Goldeyes dug themselves all the way out of the hole and actually had a 9-8 lead heading to the top of the ninth.

But that's when closer Jailen Perguero simply couldn't get the job done and the RedHawks came back to beat the Fish 12-9.

Fargo scored a run off Peguero in the top of the ninth to tie the game and then added three more in the top of the 10th to win it as Fargo took the first game of this three-game weekend series. In two innings of work, the Goldeyes closer gave up four runs on five hits.

With another heartbreaking loss, the Fish fell to 34-42 on the season, 2-2 on this six-game homestand and 16-21 at home this season.

Trailing by six, the Goldeyes put up five in the bottom of the second as Josh Mazzola led off with a double and then scored on a double by Tillman Pugh. Pugh went to third on a ground out by Ryan Babineau and then newcomer James Boddicker walked. With two out, Adam Heisler beat out an infield hit and that scored Pugh. Casio Grider singled to score Boddicker and then Reggie Abercrombie doubled to score both Heisler and Grider.

Suddenly, it was 6-5 and the Goldeyes were back in the game.

However, Fargo added runs in the fourth and sixth to take an 8-5 lead and for a team like the Goldeyes, a team that had come from behind after the seventh inning on only three times this season, it looked like an insurmountable lead.

But the Goldeyes added a pair of runs in seventh when Grider beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored on a single by Abercrombie. Then Haerther was safe on fielder's choice, Josh Mazzola singled and Luis Alen drove Haerther home with a single.

Then, in the eighth, the Goldeyes took the lead. With one out, Grider beat out an infield single and stole second. Fargo manager Doug Simunic walked Abercrombie, who was three-for-four on the night with a double and three RBI - and elected to face Haerther. Haerther took the third pitch he faced from reliever Mike Nesseth and blasted it into the gap in right-centre field. Both Grider and Abercrombie scored and the Goldeyes took a 9-8 lead with three outs to go.

But Peguero couldn't lock it down and Winnipeg lost its second straight game.

The Goldeyes finished with nine runs on 15 hits, while Fargo had eight runs on 22 hits.

Abercrombie had a huge night with two singles, a double, a walk, a stolen base a run scored and three RBI, but was injured in the top of the ninth and left the game. Grider had four singles (including two infield singles and a bunt single), three stolen bases, three runs scored and an RBI. Haerther had a double, a walk, a run scored and two RBI.

Fargo reliever Nesseth (1-3, 2.89 ERA) earned the victory, while Peguero (4-3, 4.36) blew the save and then suffered the loss.

The Goldeyes and RedHawks play Game 2 of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Shaw Park. Right-hander Matt Jackson (6-7, 4.99 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while left-hander Tyler Alexander (1-5, 3.44 ERA) will take to the bump for Fargo.
