Wingnuts Sharp in All Three Facets, Knock off Laredo

August 15, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

LAREDO, TX - For a good portion of the game on Friday night in Laredo it appeared that two second inning home runs would be the only blows traded between the Wichita Wingnuts and the Laredo Lemurs. That changed in the seventh inning when the Wingnuts broke free for five runs and never looked back on their way to a series-opening 7-1 win over their South Division foe.

Wichita (47-31) stranded a runner on third base in the first inning, but rebounded to grab the lead in the very next frame. Matt Padgett opened the inning by drawing a walk from Laredo starter Matt Loosen (4-6). Two batters later, Harrison Kain turned on a breaking ball and lined it out of the park to left to give the Wingnuts a 2-0 lead.

Tim Brown (9-2) allowed a solo home run to clean-up hitter Denis Phipps to open the bottom half of the inning which trimmed the lead to 2-1. It turned out to be the only run the efficient right-hander would surrender for the remainder of his 8.0 innings on the mound. He scattered nine hits, eight of them singles, and struck out four. Brown is now 3-0 this season against the Lemurs (41-37) with an earned run average below 3.00.

His effort kept the Wingnuts ahead by the same 2-1 margin until the opening half of the eighth frame. Taylor Smart led off the inning with a single up the middle against Loosen. Leo Vargas pushed a bunt in the direction of the pitcher who picked it up and threw wildly to first, advancing both runners into scoring position. Loosen was removed after walking Jayce Ray to load the bases.

Pete Incaviglia called on B.J. Hyatt out of the bullpen. The reliever struck out David Espinosa for the first out. The next batter, T.J. Mittelstaedt, lined a base hit into center field to extend the lead to 3-1. D'Vontrey Richardson tried to force out Vargas going to third, but sailed the throw into the dugout to force in another run. Andy LaRoche blew the game open with his first home run since joining the Wingnuts, a three-run blast to left that made it 7-1.

After Brown departed, Brad Orosey took over for the final frame. The right-hander was impressive in retiring the side in order to finish off the game. Orosey has not allowed a run in his first three appearances with the team.

The same two teams meet up again on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. inside Uni-Trade Stadium. RHP Jason Van Skike (6-5) will throw for Wichita and LHP Luis Pollorena (5-3) will be called upon by the Lemurs.
