Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Gary South Shore RailCats rode the arm of Charlie Rosario and a balanced offensive attack to a 6-2 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries in the series opener Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Rosario scattered 12 hits and got the double play ball and key strike outs when he needed it to pick up his 12th win of the year. Gary took the lead in the second behind red hot Jaimie Del Valle, who is now 7 for 16 on the road trip. Del Valle doubled off of Jeremey Strawn, then moved to third on a fielder's choice from Jose Sermo, then came home on a sac fly from Adam Taylor to make it 1-0.

The RailCats and Canaries then locked in as both starters were in control. Strawn held the RailCats in check and looked like his club might get a lead off of Rosario in the fourth. Brian Humphries led off with a single and then a double for Jason Repko put runners at second and third and no outs. Rosario then got RJ Perucki to ground out to third as JD Pulfer looked the runner back to third and then struck out back to back Canaries in Tyler Shover and former RailCat Cody Bishop to keep the game 1-0.

The RailCats then grabbed a pair of runs in the sixth off of Strawn with an RBI single for Del Valle and another from Jose Sermo to make it 3-0 South Shore.

But the Canaries were able to cut it to a one run game in the eighth, when Chris Grayson hit a two run home run to right into the south wind. Rosario had two outs with runners at second and third but got Shover to ground out to keep it a one run game.

The RailCat then cashed in three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth off of reliever James Jones. Adam Taylor singled and then was followed by a walk from Alex Hernandez. Brandon Thomas moved the runners up with a ground ball on the right side of the infield. Ryan Brockett then singled to center to score one run and it looked like another would score but Hernandez stumbled and went back to third. The throw from center went all the way through the infield and bounced over Sioux Falls catcher Tyler Shover's head to the backstop. That allowed Hernandez to go to third and Brockett who went to second on the first bounce of the throw raced to third when it hit the backstop. JD Pulfer then brought Brockett home with a sac fly to right and it was 6-2.

Andy Loomis worked a 1-2-3 ninth as Rosario (12-5) tossed his fifth straight quality start. Strawn dropped to 2-12. Jon Jones, who returned off the disabled list before the game, went 2 for 4 and Adam Taylor had a two hit night. Del Valle finished 3 for 4 scoring a pair with an RBI.

The RailCats and Canaries will play game two of the series Saturday night at 6:05. The RailCats will send out RHP Fernando Gonzalez (1-1, 5.54) while Sioux Falls will roll with LHP Joe Bircher (3-3, 3.71). The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
