Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill--- It began to look like the Cougars were going to allow another lead slip away, but instead they pulled out a 7-5 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday.
The Cougars were quick to get on the board again as the team plated two unearned runs in the first inning. With Daniel Lockhart at second base and Carlos Penalver at first, Yasiel Balaguert hit a groundball to the TinCaps's shortstop Franchy Cordero. Cordero couldn't play it cleanly and the error allowed two to score for a 2-0 Cougars advantage.
More Fort Wayne mistakes helped the Cougars score four runs in the second inning. Shawon Dunston Jr. reached on an error by Dustin Peterson to lead off the inning. After Will Remillard was hit by a pitch, Trey Martin punched in Dunston with a single. The Cougars kept the inning going with a Lockhart base hit and a fielder's choice by Penalver. Balaguert did the most damage with a two-run single to put the Cougars on top 6-0.
Franmil Reyes got the TinCaps on the board with a solo homerun to lead off the fourth inning, cutting the Cougars' lead, 6-1.
The TinCaps hung around for the rest of the game thanks to a four-run sixth inning. Josh Van Meter started off the frame with a double and was brought home by Fernando Perez's two-bagger. Fort Wayne continued to the offense with singles from Dane Phillips and Franchy Cordero. The TinCaps' rally took Tyler Skulina out of the game and brought in Justin Amlung. Ryan Miller served as Amlung's first batter and continued the damage. The TinCaps' catcher connected on a two-run double to bring Fort Wayne within one run at 6-5.
Jacob Rogers finally ended the Cougars' offensive struggles when he drove in Penalver, who led off with a double, to give the Cougars a two-run advantage, 7-5.
Skulina (1-0) picked up the first win for a Cougars' starter after allowing five runs, all earned, on six hits and striking out six. Walker Weickel (0-2) suffered the loss surrendering six runs in two innings. Tyler Bremer (1) earned the save.
The Lake County Captains will make their way to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as the Cougars' next opponent. The series begins on Friday with a pitching matchup of Daury Torrez (0-0, 1.80) for the Cougars against the Captains' Caleb Hamrick (0-0, 11.25). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
